Perfect Day at Coco Cay with My Granddaughters.
This past week, I had the absolute joy of taking my granddaughters on their birthday cruise aboard the beautiful Utopia of the Seas. As they like to say, I’m officially “the best grandma EVER” and after this trip, I think I might agree with them.
Since I travel often, they’re always FaceTiming me saying, “Nonna, we want to go away too!” So, this year I made it happen. And let me tell you our day at Coco Cay was nothing short of epic.
While this wasn’t my first time visiting the island, it was their first, so I decided to add in the water park experience. Best decision ever! I planned ahead and got a great deal on the admission (tip for future travelers: book early!), and it was so worth it. The park wasn’t overcrowded, which meant almost no lines for slides, adventures, and the wave pool. We had plenty of choices for seating too so relaxing compared to other busy resorts.
The wave pool quickly became their favorite I practically had to drag them away to try other attractions! The floating obstacle course was another big hit; it reminded us of those challenge shows we watch together (just without the pressure of a timer). The slides were a whole adventure in themselves. My twins may look alike, but they couldn’t be more different one was all in for thrills, while the other decided halfway up those crazy-high stairs that she was out. Honestly, I didn’t mind coming back down with her those steps had me nervous too (grandma confession: heights aren’t my thing 😂).
What really impressed me was the safety throughout the park. There were plenty of lifeguards and staff on deck, always watching and ready to help that gave me extra peace of mind while letting the girls run wild with excitement.
We ended our day by heading to the beach on the other side of the park. The water was absolutely perfect calm, clear, and refreshing. It was the best way to unwind after hours of fun and adventure. All in all, it truly was “A Perfect Day at Coco Cay.” A birthday trip none of us will forget!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Highly recommend especially if you’re traveling with kids. Plan ahead, grab the water park pass, and enjoy a “Perfect Day” for yourself...
Read moreHate Coco Cay! Coco Cay is nothing more than an overpriced, manufactured tourist trap with little to offer if you're not interested in swimming or paying for obscenely overpriced activities that are available at any other beach for far less. The lack of variety is stark, and the straw market there makes Temu seem high-end in comparison. The absence of an adult-only area, at the time, was also a significant drawback for us. Coco Cay feels like a waste, especially when compared to the richer experiences of visiting and exploring a real port. It appears to be an area designed primarily for Royal Caribbean to extract as much money as possible from their guests.
For food, Royal Caribbean essentially just moved the buffet from the boat to the island, but with limited offerings. Here, you can expect items like dry burgers, tacos, and salad-type stuff. I was actually looking around the island for more of a sit-down restaurant where you could pay extra for better food and enjoy nice dining and drinks on the island, aside from just the buffet and picnic tables, but they didn't even have that option. The food back on the boat is definitely better, so again what is the point.
Perhaps Coco Cay appeals to those who seldom have the opportunity to visit beaches or who particularly enjoy average buffet food. However, for me, it's a destination that lacks much in terms of exploration, local adventure, or uniqueness. I will make sure it's not included as a stop on any of my future cruises.
(NOTE: Hideaway Beach was not open yet when we went but that does seem to address the problem by providing an Adult Only area for guests - although I understand that will not be a free area...
Read moreIt was my first time to Coco Cay on Royal Caribbean and we had a wonderful time. Right when the boat docked it was very stormy outside so we stayed on the boat for about 3 hours till it cleared up and stopped raining. Thank God it stopped so we could explore the island.
Once we got on the Island, we walked around a little to see what spot we wanted to stay at. Oasis Lagoon was the spot to be. They had a DJ playing and the pool was so packed it was hard to move around. If it wasn't because we wanted a more relaxing vibe we definitely would have spent the day here.
We decided to keep exploring and went to the other side of the island to South Beach. It was much more chill and calm. They have cabanas you can rent or just lounge on chairs on the beach. They have a basketball hoop, volleyball court, large games (connect 4) and you can rent a floatie for the ocean. They had a floating bar which I thought was pretty cool too. After 3 pm, they didn't have any towels available so if you go later in the afternoon bring towels from the ship just remember to bring them back.
They also have a bar near the basketball courts but the drinks were not that good. Think of those free all inclusive Caribbean spots where you drink a lot and can't taste the alcohol. Just not with Caribbean prices.
The island has plenty to do in a day and the staff was friendly. They have a waterpark and zipline. They have a trolley that goes around the island that makes it easier to navigate and get back to the boat. They are also building a separate section on the North West side of the island that from what I hear that will be adults only. It should be completed...
