Die zwölf Festungen, aus denen 1914 der befestigte Gürtel um Lüttich bestand, wurden von General Leman geführt. Ihr heldenhafter Widerstand während der Schlacht von Lüttich war eine der wesentlichen Waffenleistungen zu Beginn des Konflikts. Lüttich war die erste Stadt außerhalb Frankreichs, die mit der französischen Ehrenlegion ausgezeichnet wurde, in Anerkennung einer Kampfbegeisterung, die eine bessere Organisation der französischen Verteidigung über Wallonien hinaus ermöglichte. Die brillante Verteidigung des Forts Fléron während der beiden Kriege - besonders an die Feuerkraft im Jahr 1914 - konnte es nicht vor seinem Abbau während des Baus der Wohnungen der Stadt Fléron retten. Heute sind nur noch wenige Überreste für die Öffentlichkeit...
