Sadly what could be a wonderful site, misses out due to some basic things:

The traffic and traffic noise around the lakes is terrible and when there are a lot of people, cars are parked all over the place, including up the verges, on the foot paths... quite incredible.

Motorbikes race around the lakes at high speed, polluting the natural surroundings with the petrol, but worse of all the incredible noise, that nobody does anything about. The police don't do anything and don't even seem to care. The asbl of the Lakes certainly does not care as this has been going on for years and just gets worse each year. You try to find a nice spot to relax around the lakes or on the lake, and you can hear the motorbikes even whilst there.

There are no bins anywhere, so consequently people just leave their rubbish all around the place. Some days it looks like a rubbish tip as it is not cleaned up swiftly.

The infrastructure seems to be put together with little vision, including some stupid water golf where you hit golf balls into the lake!!! Imagine that for a "natural environment"! I hope those lost golf balls are bio-degradable!

People light barbecues all over the place, leaving burnt patches all round the lakes, including leaving their rubbish when they leave, as of course there are no bins to be found anywhere!

If you want to find a nice place, with benches for a picnic, there is nothing to be found anywhere, so you just have to sit on the grass and try to enjoy your food, whilst you hear the echos of the racing traffic and motorbikes in the distance.

At the end of the afternoons, groups of motorbikes accumulate around the aquacentre and rev up their motorbikes, makes loads of noise. Nobody thinks to put a stop to this very anti-social behaviour!

So sadly, if you are a lover of nature, quiet, calm, respect of the environment, this place is not for you.

The asbl of the Lakes seems to have either no vision for this site, or at least an incoherent vision, that does not promote the beauty and nature of the place. Rather, they let the few anti-social users spoil the place for others, year after year, with the situation only getting worse. What...

absolutely fantastic trip, we love such walkings, part of the route goes along the rush road, but mostly it goes in the woods or by a quiet road, the dam is nice, big, water is clean, we found many crayfish there! we did the route marked black on the map, parked at the parking lot Falemprise (for free), in the middle of the route in the village Cerfontaine we had an excellent Chimay beer and bought some meal in Carrefour, in total it took us 6 hours including a small picnic, I recommend to visit this place, we will be back for sure... pros: you can make this route be bike without...

My favourite place in Belgium! The lakes are a great place to visit, we enjoy the beach area that has lifeguards during the summer months. At the beach area you can rent paddle boards, kayaks, sailing boats and wind surfing boards. You can also put your own paddle boards/ kayaks out on the lake. The bottom lake has a cable pull park area. There are walking and biking trails around the lakes.

The lake also has a diving spot. For 4 euro per day, you can do as many dives here as you want. Friendly people. There is an infirmary in case something goes wrong. There is a restaurant where you can eat something between dives. Order your meal before the dive and it will be ready on the hour you requested.
