The Mons Memorial Museum is a military museum with exhibitions of wars and battles which involved the city of Mons. The museum has a large and varied collection of uniforms, arms and smaller items all the way from the middle ages through to the 20th century. Although pre-modern conflicts are covered, there’s a special emphasis on the two world wars, which were so devastating for Belgium. The narrative of the museum is fairly apolitical documenting testimonies from soldiers, from both sides of these conflicts.
I especially enjoyed the videos of how the territories of Belgium changes hands over time, which beats descriptions any day. Like they say, a picture can paint a thousand words.

Read moreGreat museum covering mainly the story of Mons in WWI and WWII. The artefacts are well-presented and include many excerpts from diaries and news items of the time. There are short multimedia presentations at kiosks throughout the museum that chronicle battles, key events and changes to the front lines - these presentations are outstanding, their approach to conveying the details of battles in context of timeline and geography is exceptional. I wish the videos were available online. I recommend the free parking at nearby Pont Rouge, it's just a 4 minute walk...

Mons Memorial Museum focuses on the lives of the people affected by the in the conflict. The soldiers on both sides, the lives of the people living under occupation, the difficult decisions that they had to make.
