Church of St. Elisabeth of Mons — Attraction in Mons

The Eglise Sainte-Elisabeth de Mons is a church not far from the Grand Place of Mons. The church is a mixture of Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque as you’d expect from a church that’s been standing since the early 16th century and no doubt undergone restoration. Especially as the church was gutted by a fire in the 1715 and inside, you can see where the original Gothic structures withstood the fire and what had to be rebuilt, which is the majority. Not much of the original building has been restored and there’s only a few stained glass windows, the rest are plain glass. The church reputedly has a reliquary holding the relics of Saint George, which is housed in one of the chapels.

Unless you’re extremely pious with a need to see relics and reliquaries of saints, I’d only visit the church if you have time to spare. There’s also a statue of Leopold II outside the south west corner...

De Sint - Elisabeth kerk ligt tegenover het Paleis van Justitie.

Ze evolueerde van een eenvoudig kapelletje tot een belangrijke parochiekerk.

Voorheen was de allereerste kapel ondergebracht in een voormalig herenhuis . Dit huis werd geschonken in 1345 door de zeer vrome Isabeau d´ Antoing , zodat het aan haar patrones kon worden gewijd.

De huidige kerk werd pas in 1516 gebouwd. De kerk heeft een evolutie van stijlen ondergaan , voornamelijk als gevolg van een brand die plaatsvond tijdens de '' Viering van de Aankondiging '' in 1714. Een slechte bediening van een vuurpijl die de Heilige Geest oproept zou aan de oorsprong gelegen hebben.

De kerk werd gerestaureerd door de beroemde Bergense architect CJ de Bettignies.

Een belangrijke bezienswaardigheid in de kerk zijn de lansen van Sint-Joris. Deze worden elk jaar gebruikt voor het traditionele Doudou-festival.

Très jolie église à visiter, mais, un peu bruyante avec ses portes grandes ouvertes ! En faire le tour à notre rythme, s'assoir pour se recueillir, pour les personnes croyantes, s'isoler afin de prier, dommage qu'il n'y ait pas de bougies de Sainte-Elisabeth, ou de l'église pour rapporter comme souvenir aux personnes qui ne peuvent pas se déplacer ! Il y a quand même des cierges que nous pouvons allumer avant de partir, pour continuer...
