Today we were visiting the exhibition with two 10 years old children. We got the audioguides at the entrance that were set in our selected languages, when we approached the objects explained in the audioguides we could select if the listener was a child or an adult, this made the visit very enjoyable for both groups of ages. The kids were listening and answering some quiz and had a great time. Additionally there was some interactive screens where the children could listen and learn more about the exhibition (they enjoyed them). The exhibition was larger and more impressive that what I had expected, still it was a nice size for a family (not too overwhelming). We will come back soon. Additionally, last week I purchased a book online ('100 key pieces, one hundred stories by Gallo-Roman Museum Tongeren) that explains a selection of 100 artefacts exhibited in the museum for preparing a kind of treasure hunt with a few of the artefacts, that activity was also welcomed. And finally, the most important, the staff went an extra mile in every possible way to make the visit as sucessfull as it was, we are extremely...
Read moreWe bought the tickets online in advance and would recommend doing so. We did appreciate the low entrance fee of 8 euros. The museum is one of the very best I have seen in many years. The building is modern and well designed. There are multiple toilets and free lockers (you do need a 1 euro coin to use them). We liked the free audioguide (in multiple languages); the many videos and the way the artifacts were organized and explained a lot. There is a way to do a fast tour if you just want the highlights; there’s the adult tour; and there’s the tour for kids. All well recognizable. One can also get a group tour with a guide. We really appreciated the lightweight portable chairs that we took with us through the entire museum. They made the visit a lot more comfortable. We expected to be in there for 90 minutes but did end up taking 3 hours and ½ and could have easily been in there longer if we hadn’t gotten hungry. The museum focuses on the history from the prehistory into the beginning of the Middle Ages, often with an extra focus on the local history. The museum really exceeded all of our...
Read moreExcellent experience!! We were first received by a really kind receptionist who started a conversation with us about science. All the staff of the museum was really helpful and nice to us.
The museum explains the history of the region starting 5x10^5 years ago and gives a very comprehensive and detailed description about the development of new technologies and the communities from hunter gatherers to agricultural communities and the pre-romanic cultures. Then there is a very detailed explanation about the roman presence in the region and life in the empire. The exhibition ends with the invasion of the germanic tribes and the start of the middle ages.
It is a very cohesive exhibition with excellent audio in english which at the end of the exhibition you can email to yourself to hear it from the comfort of your home in case you missed anything! Plus, we also noticed that the museum has a lot of good content for kids and the museum store has really great products with ancient...
