The White Fortress, which is situated atop a hill that offers a fantastic view of Sarajevo and its surroundings, is one of the five fortifications that were built as part of the defensive wall around the old town of Vratnik.
It is believed that the White Fortress, which overlooks the eastern entrance to the Sarajevo Valley, takes its name from the white rocks that were used in its construction.
Archeological research indicates that the oldest parts of the fortress were built during the Middle Ages, at the end of the 14th or beginning of the 15th century, and that other sections were added during the Ottoman period and then later during the Austro-Hungarian period.

Read moreArea of the ruins has fences around it, and it costs 5 KM/person to enter. I regret paying, for renovations of the place are still unfinished and there were miscellaneous building items scattered around the ground which kinda ruined taking pictures of the fortress itself. I suppose it would look really nice once they finish it though, but it is still a long way from complete. There were also no benches to sit and watch sunset/views from.
You can get as good pictures from outside as from inside fences, there isn't that much difference (in my opinion) that you should pay the entry fee. Visit it when it is finished though, and I'm sure it'll be...

A basic shell now remains, but the entrance fee is minimal and the views are awesome, it's a short walk (25 / 35 mins) from the old town (Baščaršija is Sarajevo's old bazaar)
