A beautiful deep sandy beach that seems to go on forever. Large areas of it are over taken by paid sun loungers catering mostly to those who want to spend the day there utilising the many bars and snacks vendors on the beach itself but there is still ample clear areas in-between these zones where you can set up your own space.
The sea is shallow for a long way out and is very warm there is a large amount of weed in the water though it's of no harm but takes a bit of getting used to as it brushed past the legs and so on my 10 year old soon got over it and once you walk so far out it thins substantially.
There are many water sports active here all at reasonable rates and just like everything it can be haggled if there is lots of you for example.
Keep the suncream at the ready as it's intense out there and drink lots of water we felt quite lethargic on the first trip as we hadn't drank enough. (Easily done when you're having fun)
One word of warning while there we noticed two women wandering then setting up unnecessarily close to other people's belongings they was glared and questioned a few times and then they moved on . We watch them do this about 6 times and they clearly had no intention of remaining in one place (they was thieves) the lifeguards said they stay away for the most part but a few do come try their luck . So just be vigilant and don't bring unnecessary stuff or valuables with you.
On a plus you get some nice chaps wander the beach selling drinks and fresh fruits. A nice little service when...
Read moreDO NOT COME HERE AFTER SEPTEMBER 29TH! The city is like a ghost town, Sunny Beach is only for tourists, there are no actual people living here and from the 1st of October or maybe even a bit earlier everything will be closed or as the Bulgarians say "finished" ("this shop is finished please go to next one", and the next one will also be finished). Even the supermarkets will shut down. Subway was open but did not have any bread or toppings at all. Everything will say it is open on Google and when you get there it's shut down for the winter. There are barely any restaurants left to choose from and the ones we tried weren't that great, the standard for good food does not seem to be the same as in other European countries e.g. Germany. The beach is nice and mostly clean, but the weather in the beginning of October is not as good. When we arrived it rained for two days and there do not seem to be enough precautions for rain as small lakes will form on every street and there aren't always sidewalks, so you'll have trouble walking places. All in all, a great disappointment, do not recommend. Maybe better during the summer time/season, but has very little for exploring to offer. Would recommend sozopol and Burgas, in those places you at least see a little bit of culture and there are actual people...
Read moreYou have to have realistic expectations. It's a popular place for Brit holidaymakes so there's a lot of "Bulgarian Blackpool" about the place. Stalls full of fake designer goods, loud music etc. But it is a fairly cheap place to stay with decent weather, and if you're willing to explore and look around there's plenty of Bulgaria to see - visit Nessebar, Pomorie, Burgas and Sozopol, all easy to get to for a more "authentic" experience It seems to be split into three distinct zones, the more family friendly and relaxed Southern end, the party till you can't even see straight centre around Flower St, then the more expensive bits to the North. Always gone as a family so always stayed at the Southern end. Pickpockets are an issue, as are beggars and street sellers, but that's true of all tourist places nowadays. It's got a lot more expensive over the last decade, but this has been the case in all Eastern European countries that are moving (or have)...
