Fort Malden is a great historic experience when visiting the Amherstburg area as a family, or while traveling and visiting Canada in the Essex County area. The knowledgeable staff take history of Canadian frontiers and explain the history of this defensive post where British troops once stationed along the Great Lakes. The landscape is unique, deep rolling green gullies surround some of the fort, restored barracks for troops, children can wear costumes and fire imaginary wooden rifles. There is a kitchen serving bread and porridge by staff that wear Era-authentic clothing. It's a relaxing day out for a family, place to have a picnic with views of Detroit River, Boblo Island, there's some pensioners cottages and a few games of age old, like tossing bean sacks. Stroll the waterfront and afterwards have dinner or drinks in one of the cozy pubs and restaurants downtown Amherstburg. See my photos in the gift shop, as former volunteers for Parks Canada, our experiences were documented in the 2017 Park Pass campaign. Lots...
Read moreThis is a nice fort. I went here and was satisfied with my experience. This fort has a visitor center with a scale model of the fort and a few informational signs explaining why the fort was built and its history. This fort also has a museum in the fort’s old office, and there are soldier barracks you can walk inside as well. The museum has interesting exhibits that go more in depth about the history of the fort, and the fort’s barracks are quite well preserved. After this fort fell out of use, several small cottages were built around Amherstburg for pensioners who used to be soldiers on the condition that they maintain the fort. One of these cottages is still preserved. After exploring this fort I left, satisfied with my experience. I gave this fort five stars because it’s well preserved and has...
Read moreIt was a quick walk around for our first visit in years. I will say that the experience is absolutely amazing. The kids and the young adults dressed in period clothing, are so knowledgeable in the history of the artifacts and the structures in buildings. Can't wait for the next visit when we can spend some time and go through fully. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the history of our country. The price of admission is less than $10 for two adults. And I believe if you go with a family of three or more the children get in free. Under 12 I believe. They do a regular musket show, where they fire off a few rounds. It's a great experience overall. Amherstburg is the Premier place in the Windsor area for a great getaway out of the city. Lots of fun and beautiful things...
