Come to visit Vancouver from Hong Kong, me and my wife with three kids, aged 15, 12, 11, joined the single day 3 hours family private lesson last saturday. We don't have any experience in skiing before. We only watched people playing the sport on TV. I just want to let the kids have a bit of taste of what it is like to ski as a travel experience. It turned out to be one of the best memories of my holiday trip.
Follow are keys things Booking: it had to be made by phone calling. (although I would prefer direct internet booking if available) The process was smooth. The one who helped us book was Gordon. He put down everything in details very patiently and explained very clearly about the details.
Travel: We took a uber from downtown to the skii resort. It was a very smooth process. (there were also free shuttle bus to take. We only took the shuttle bus when we left the resort. It was a smooth process.)
Getting and dressing up the rental gears: . Gordon adviced us to arrive 1 hr earlier to get the rental ready and to dress up . The time is really needed especially as someone who is here for the first time. I would suggest to arrive at least 1.5hr earlier to be prepared. Our session started at 12:45, and we arrived at ~11:30am. It was not busy during the time we reserved. So there was not much lining up. By the time we returned the gears at around 5pm ,there were a lot more people coming and the line was quite long. The staff were friendly. We rented everything, helmet, jackets, pants, skii shoes. Only thing we brought up are warm gloves, which is really impotant.
The amazing instructors: Matthew and James. We loved them so much. They are very passionate in that sport and really tried their best to teach us with great patience and professionism. We broke up into two teams, Matthew took care of me and my wife, and James took care my childen.
In the end of session, I was able to skii down the green path with a lot of joy. My kids also had a lot of fun and were able to skii some more gentle slopes. They said the intructor is so nice. They love that sport now. Thank you to the great instructors!
The skii path and facilities: The mountain was beautiful. The trees and snow covered path were stunning for us. It has many friendly path for people with no skiing experience to gradually build up the skills. The magic carpet and peak chair is great and convienient to bring skiiers back to starting point after skiing down to the end of the path.
Report card with instructor feedback: Very nice to hear feedback from instructor and it did give me a sense of achievement. "The Recommended level for your next lesson: Level 3" make me want to keep going on with the sport more.
Final feeling: I watched google comments for all three skii resort near Vancouver city. Some of the one star comment do make me worried before making the booking. In the end for us it turn out to be a great expereince. I definetly have no regrets selecting this place and choosing the family private lesson course. Recommend: There are storage facilies. It would be better if they were more spacious and more...
Read moreOverall a lovely ski resort that’s beginner and family friendly with excellent customer service and knowledgeable staff. Ideal runs for skiers at levels 1-4 and for families with small children.
This is a smaller family owned resort so it’s good to know your money is really going right back into the local economy. As far as ski world goes, the prices for passes, rental and lessons are very affordable (the most affordable compared to Grouse and Cypress and certainly whistler). You also get breathtaking views (better than Grouse and Cypress imho) of the city and surrounding mountains on a clear day.
The runs: 4/5 There are a few black runs and green runs, the vast majority are blue. I highly recommend this mountain for those at level 1- beginner 4. There is one big bowl like area by the lodge ideal for focused practice on everything you learned in your level 1-3 classes. Then you can go to the mystery chair and put time into going down actual slopes. When I was a beginner I used this mountain for loads of practice to get from 1 to 4. Aesthetically speaking, runs are very pretty with a unique “winter wonderland” quality and meander all around which keeps them interesting. Runs are well marked, maintained and there’s some little fun parts for a bit of off piste (nothing crazy like whistler). The Brockton chair was broken all season so idk what runs are like from there.
If you are an advanced skier (level 5-6) you may get bored more quickly: the runs are short (they don’t extend down the entire mountain just part of it) and there are only 3 black runs. If you are a cliff jumping daredevil there is one black called devils drop. In short, this isn’t the place to film stunts for the gram but it is a place skiers of varying levels will find something for them to enjoy.
Lines: 5/5 On the weekend it is busy as expected but never a wait more than 10 minutes. The trick is to make it between Sunday - Wednesday after work for night skiing - many times I skied with no line at all!
Food: 4/5 tasty and reasonably priced. All your basics from burgers to poutine and some baked goods.
Staff: 5/5 Friendly and helpful staff who are keen to make sure you get what you need and have a good time, they are not rushed or harried. I did take a class for level 3 and the instructor was fantastic, really knew her stuff and made adjustments necessary as people learned at different paces. Heard via word of mouth privates are very good too.
Night skiing: 5/5 Everything is well lit and the...
Read moreOur visit to Mt Seymour was fun overall, but a few opportunities could have made it better still.
First, it was amazing going on a weekday late morning. No waits for rentals and no lines for chair lifts! The runs were quite well groomed. The lifts ran well. Their RF ID card system worked well, allowing us through the gates at each lift without issues. Lift operators were generally friendly and helpful. Folks at the rental shop were also patient and helpful too. Food was really good at the cafeteria. Actually the grilled chicken burgers were huge and delicious, and served with a huge amount of fries. Once the fog disappeared, the view at the top of the mountain was stunning, especially as the sunset. My guests and I just hung out absorbing the view for a while. Memories for a lifetime!
A few things that made things a little less enjoyable... Signage for some of the runs were confusing, especially for us first-timers. A few times we were puzzled which way to go, in spite of looking ahead at maps. Signs were not placed in ideal locations, so we had to pause and back track a bit, which meant floundering back up trails with skiis on. There were also a couple flat horizontal patches between runs which meant having to push ourselves across, which disrupted our flow. Not so fun. Unfortunately our day ended when I got completely blindsided by a teen who must have been bombing down the green run I was on, because he slammed into me and I went flying out of my skiis. Dazed for a while, no help arrived. He apologized profusely. Minor injuries and fortunately I was wearing a helmet. There were many fast and reckless groups of teens after 4pm. This can happen anywhere I guess. Could possibly use more ski patrol, especially when the kids are out.
Oh also, online process was SO frustrating! I lost count how many times I had to go back and register myself and two guests. It would say I didnt enter date of birth, when I did. It said I already used an email address. There were two slightly different registration sites/pages. Confusing info about ski levels and ski abilities. Etc etc. I nearly gave up. No choice but to buy tickets in advance online, or I would have just gone up and registered/ paid up there. And then so many waivers for us all to sign. Exhausting.
But, overall, a fun time at this...
