I was walking down this street one night and suddenly this twenty-something guy with two dogs looks at me, smiles, approaches me, and starts to say something. At first, I was confused as his words seemed like gibberish. After a while, I realized that he was trying to string together a bunch of meaningless Chinese words in a terrible accent. Because I look Chinese. Odd to have this kind of experience in a place like Markham, but this just goes to show the type of place this is. Unlike Main Street Unionville, which a friend of mine so aptly described as having a self-aware faux old Canadian town, Main Street Markham is the most real old-town Canadian street you might find in Markham.
