My experience at Carleton was overall good. The Pros: tunnels to meander between classrooms, you literally don't have to step outside the gym is fantastic and I enjoyed going in the early mornings and afternoons some of the facilities seem to be very clean and well thought out, with some modern designs, decor, and architecture, making studying or waiting for a class to be both relaxing and soothing access to the o-train (when it works) is very easy to get downtown, central ottawa, or ottawa south with ease and the bus routes that stop at carleton are mostly on time, the bus shelters are heated, and the bus routes are very reliable though can get busy it is quite easy to navigate between buildings in order to access classrooms, study rooms, events, food court, or different student services the professors I had responded timely and were very accessible after class, I especially experienced compassion from one of my professors when I confused the date of an exam and was able to take it almost immediately after the fact student advisors were extremely helpful the library services including printing and workshops are pluses alumni benefits give you great access to banking (basic, loans), insurance, the gym, etc
The Cons: not every professor is high quality, though I have found that experience to be somewhat universal with the other rival university in Ottawa the tuition is very high for international students and at the time I was forced to pay the full UHIP fee because my private health insurance did not cover very specific things like obesity treatment and transgender surgery (which I would never use to begin with) it is a university that some look down upon but CarletonU is doing very promising efforts to change the public's...
Read moreI am writing to share my struggles with my mental health due to my experience at Carleton. Over the past few years, I have faced ongoing difficulties with the university that have worsened my depression, and at times, l have felt hopeless enough to consider my own life. The emotional toll this has taken on me has been overwhelming, and I feel that I am being unfairly blamed for things that aren't my fault. The system at this university is extremely frustrating and confusing. I constantly feel like I'm being asked to go above and beyond to provide documents and information, even when the mistakes made by the university have caused these issues. For example, I was only told much later in the semester , but by that point, all the deadlines had already passed. This late communication has caused significant stress and confusion. It’s not even fixed now i have to gather all the evidence to solve such issue! Upon that it was the university’s fault to begin with and all what they care about is money! The way Carleton handles students, especially those facing mental health struggles, has made me feel neglected, unsupported, and sometimes invisible. The continuous frustration with the administration and the lack of empathy has only deepened my depression. I am in a place where I feel constantly overwhelmed and hopeless, and I need help navigating this difficult situation. Please understand that my concerns are not only about the university's mistakes it is the emotional and mental impact these ongoing issues have had on me. This experience has been deeply damaging, and I need assistance in figuring out how to move forward. Thank you for not...
Read moreNice campus. A little out of the way though. Only one major entry from Bronson so it can get backed up during the morning rush. LRT line 2 cuts right through the middle of campus. While that's convenient the line itself hasn't opened as of fall 2024. That's not a reflection of the campus but rather the terrible OC Transpo management. However, while convenient for students the LRT is also noisy. With the stop right where all the residents are you will hear the bell of the LRT as it stops at and departs the station.
Parking is also an issue. Carleton just demolished a multi-story parking lot right in the middle of campus. They probably figured the LRT will be running so they don't need the parking. However, there is supposedly 700 students in waitlist for a space. Their system crashed when they opened up parking pass registrations.
Speaking of residence, some are really old and some are small. The one by child was supposedly converted from singles to doubles. I would say that the size of the room is more fitting as a single.
I won't get into the academics as different programs have different qualities. I think there are programs at Carleton that are not getting the credit they deserve, such as Engineering, Architecture, etc. it's a progressive school I think compared with more traditional programs at other universities. There is also a coop stream here for some programs, which is a good alternative for the students. I really hope Carleton can get better recognition in the future and better ranking in university reviews. I think it...
