A smaller sister to the lock 21 at Peterborough, the Burleigh Falls in Ontario are also breathtaking. No fees of any kind, picnic tables available, even a boat ramp is there, however you have to be careful because of you are not familiar with the area, there is a zone with submerged rocks right at the end of the boat ramp: There is a red big sign to warn users about it, but still, get yourself information with local authority if you want to bring your boat.
I visited in early October so the autumn colours were around. So beautiful both sides of the lock. The doors of the lock are massive, you can just imagine all the kinetic energy stored there by the weight of the water. Doors are angled, not straight, which is a clever design imho so the weight of the water keeps pushing them closed against each other, the stronger the force, the better they keep the seal. Read moreThis place is beautiful with the rocks and the shirt falls at the back with an awesome landscape! The only problem is that there isn’t parking spots close to Old Burleigh Rd. But there’s a parking lot at the Trent-Severn Waterway Lock 28 for $2 flat rate, bring $1 coins only though, the machine is old. It’s probably a 8min walk.
IMPORTANT: Due to pandemic, the access to the lake from Old Burleigh Rd. Is closed until further notice, check with the local authorities before you go.
