The Wong UK Garden is located just northeast of the Regal Riverside Hotel in Sha Tin Wai. The garden itself is a small leisure area where you find an early 20th-century Hakka home and declared monument (1989) that can be visited from 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm daily.
The Old House at Wong Uk Garden is all that is left of an old village that once rested on the shores of what was once Tide Cove. Lost to reclamations for housing developments you see today, this house was not demolished but left as a reminder of the village and old trading station that thrived here until the late 19th-century.
The Wong Uk house is of traditional Hakka architecture with two hall and three bay layout and grey brick exterior. It possesses murals and decorative mouldings on the facade above the entrance. Within you'll find six rooms, including an old kitchen as well as a back hall which includes four information panels providing brief historical account of the old Wong Uk village, the old house as well as a bit about its architecture and highlights. The rest of the rooms are empty but there are more nice murals to view near the ceiling of the two halls.
In the end, the Wong Uk Old house is a neat little place to visit if you are staying at the Regal Riverside Hotel or happen to be in this...
Read moreLocated in the south-west corner of Yuen Chau Kok, Wong Uk Village was founded during the reign of Qianlong (1736-1795) in the Qing dynasty by the Wong clan from Xingning county in Guangdong. Most of the village’s old buildings fell into ruins and were later demolished when Tide Cove was reclaimed for the development of Sha Tin New Town. All that remains is the Old House, built around 1911 by Wong Tsing Wo, a 19th generation descendant. The old house is a two-storey green-brick structure with fine mural paintings and traditional decorations. It now stands as the reminder of the history of Yuen...
Read moreA preserved house from the early 1900s, all that is left standing of the Wong UK Village that was a thriving transport hub in the dynastic era. A small gem of a find. The operating word is 'small'. There is not much to the house in terms of square space, but it is well preserved with ceiling and wall murals, and a kiln in the kitchen area. A fascinating slice of a lived past. The place appears not to attract the usual horde of tourists, and it was nice to spend some time in the old courtyard and admire the architecture in peace. Not perhaps worth a track out to Sha Tin just to see this, but worth a half hour of your time if you're in the area, or staying in the...
