I came to the InterContinental Shanghai Expo Hotel in the Pudong New Area District. This is the fifth out of six Shanghai InterContinental I have been to. My stay occurred from August 3rd to August 4th. This is the third time I enter an InterContinental Brand as a Spire Ambassador Member. ||I arrived at 2PM of my check-in day. I was checked in by Front Desk Trainee Carol Zheng. The check-in was done in a timely a manner. From start to finish, she completed my check-in in 5 minutes and 23 seconds. Unfortunately, the only thing missing was the membership drink voucher. The first time I was not given a membership drink at any IHG hotel.||I booked the Superior Room. As part of my Ambassador Membership, I got upgraded to the Club Room with a majestic view of Nanpu Bridge with Lujiazui in the background. The Newly Renovated Club Room (Room 2518) featured luxurious bedding, multiple closets and facilities that feel different to the Standard InterContinental Superior Room. Unfortunately, the presentation of the room was to my disappointment. The cleaning of that room was not thorough. I found some dusting markings that can be obviously visible when you run your fingers through them. The day bed was worn out with one of its legs broken. I found a lot of permanent stains around the marble tables. Furthermore, slippers weren’t given in this room and the Ambassador Fruit Plate was nowhere to found. I got Friendly and Professional Housekeeper Ms. Liu to clean and redo the areas uncleaned. I told her to fetch the Guest Relations Manager. She did, and she was very kind to do so. ||Guest Relations Manager Andrew Yan came a few minutes later so I could explain the situation I have encountered. Understanding that the room was not fully prepared for me to the InterContinental standards. Mr. Yan granted me Club Benefits at the Temporary Club InterContinental Lounge in the Italian Restaurant. The actual lounge is under renovations. He had me wait in the lounge so that he can prepare a well-suited replacement. As I had my lovely Afternoon Tea at the Lounge, Club Lounge Trainee Iris Gu was there to take care of me. When Mr. Yan returned, he escorted me to Room 2401. To my shocking surprise, he has prepared me a Stunning and yet Gorgeous Executive Suite. ||Upon inspection of the Suite, I was satisfied with the cleaning. All membership benefits were finally given. Mr. Yan also helped me get a pair of slippers and presented me by placing at the ground. Mr. Yan also went the extra step of giving me directions to my destination after check-out. This is certainly the one of the best Guest Relations Manager I have had the honor of interacting with in my trips to 16 InterContinental hotels in a year. He certainly is fit to hold a higher position up the hotel hierarchy. ||The Suite is 75SQM (800sqft). In this suite, you have a private comfortable bedroom with modernized amenities like the JBL speaker and phone charger. The bed is certainly a comfortable one, this hotel has one of the best ventilation system I had so far. You have a living room with its own couch, desk and TV. You have a master bathroom with a round bathtub, shower, Japanese Toilet, along with two sinks and it’s amenities. Waiting for me at the table is my fruit plate and two bottles of Perrier. The view was different however. It is a view of the former 2010 Shanghai Expo. You have a beautiful view of the Huangpu River and Lupu Bridge. This hotel simply has the best view of all 6 InterContinental hotels I have seen. ||Since I had a 120RMB Membership Food Credit, I wanted to have some dinner with this discounted voucher. I wanted to order some food to the club lounge, as to what InterContinental Hongqiao NECC’s lounge offer. Mr. Yan had arranged that for me. I ordered some Fish and Chips. He arranged Club Lounge Supervisor Ming Ma, to help me throughout the Happy Hour Service and Dinner Service. He is a friendly fellow. So was Ms. Gu. Both were one of the best Club InterContinental Lounge Attendants I had the pleasure of getting service with. ||I had breakfast at the Cafe 1188. It certainly was a superb breakfast experience. I had some breakfast meats, scrambled eggs, RouJiaMo prepared by Chef Singh, bread, fruits and a lot of fruit juices. I like how the restaurant attendants placed me in the membership lounge area with the familiar Ambassador reservations marker. Ranking this InterContinental Buffet Experience with other InterContinental Hotel Breakfasts, Cafe 1188 has made #5 out of 13 Mainland China InterContinental Hotel Buffets. ||Check-out was performed by presumed Chief Concierge Sam Zhang. He was a friendly fellow who got my payment methods switched to my preferred AliPay method over an International Debit Card. Solid Check-out.||Overall, I think this was a memorable stay at this InterContinental Hotel. It did much better than my previous InterContinental Hotel visit. Despite the unfortunate shortcomings, I think this hotel has a lot of potential to become the best out of all 6 InterContinental hotels in Shanghai. Based into the compensation and customer service overwhelming those shortcomings, I have decided to rate this hotel 5 out of 5 stars for this stay. I got to truly recognize authentic standards of the InterContinental brand. I have created an unofficial ranking list of my hotel visits in this brand. As of this published date, I have ranked this hotel #5 out of 16 InterContinental Hotels I visited. ||It was truly a memorable stay, and I look forward to my...
Read moreI have been to Shanghai a few times but this was my first time staying in this property. The check in experience was very efficient and Judy was very welcoming and friendly. My membership status was acknowledged and benefits of staying in a club room was also enumerated and explained. She also mentioned that I was given an upgrade to a suite overlooking the city skyline and the river. She also gave me the customary welcome drink coupons and another discount coupon to any of the in-house restaurants. Simon from the concierge desk helped us with our luggage and offered to give us recommendations on where to go and what to do for the Chinese New Year's Eve celebrations. He was also very friendly and very welcoming. Our luggage was brought to the room in no time at all.
The room was simply amazing and the views were indeed spectacular and tastefully decorated with amazing photos of the bygone era of Shanghai all displayed over the place, even in the bathrooms. The Shanghai skyline was perfectly framed by the floor to ceiling windows both from the living room and the bedroom. The spacious foyer was tastefully decorated and on the side was the half bath. The spacious living area had a big sofa and a lounge swivel chair that was used a few times just to admire the incredible views. The desk area was strategically tucked away on the side and it had everything that one needs to do some work if so desired. The entertainment wall system hid the coffee and tea stations with the mini bar and cups and wine glasses neatly tucked away in their own sliding drawers. The bedroom itself was massive with a few closet areas, good enough for guests to store their belongings even when staying long term. The massive bathroom had a round soaker tub, separate water closet and shower area. I love the toiletries as always but was a little bit surprised on the miniature versions, rather than the bigger version that I came to expect when staying in club room or suite, especially in China. However, it wasn't a big deal as they left enough toiletries to last us a few days. The welcome gift of assorted fruits and nuts and pastries were already on the coffee table when we got to the room and also, the room was already turned down for the night - slippers left on both sides of the bed and robes hanging on the bathroom walls. Wow! Everything was well thought of for the guests to have a comfortable stay!
Before heading out for the night, we visited the Club InterContinental to have drinks and light meal and the food offering, although not as elaborate as the other two InterContinental properties in the city that we have stayed in before, were very good and quite satisfying. Drink selections were amazing and I had almost a bottle of champagne for myself. The lounge was massive and tastefully decorated and it has a second floor. Again, the views were simply spectacular. I could have sat still by the window to do nothing but sip champagne and admire that mesmerizing views. Ramon and his colleagues were also very efficient and helpful. We stayed for a few minutes and headed off to enjoy the festivities in Yuyuan Garden and the Bund. We came to the lounge once again before heading to bed and Ramon was still there and we chatted for a big until the lounge closed. We came back again for breakfast the next day and checked out the food offerings but we opted to go to the buffet downstairs as we wanted a little bit more selections. Although the breakfast at the club lounge were plentiful, we did enjoy the massive selections at the Café 1811. We went back to the lounge once again for the afternoon tea before heading out. Honestly speaking, this was one of my favourite Club InterContinentals because of the views and the friendly staff and of course, the ambiance. Although massive in terms of space but one can find intimate corner to have a quite conversation.
I have been to over 60 countries and a stayed in few InterContinental properties and this property is one of my favourites! Will definitely come back if I'm in the...
Read moreBooked 2 rooms (1 pay 1 redeem free night) for a 2 nights weekend holiday with my family. The pay room was booked with breakfast for 2 but the free room wasn’t since no such option found online. First day we 3 went to breakfast together in CAFÉ 1188. Staff on the door told me one of our room has no breakfast include and question me who is/are in that room. I explain I couldn’t remember how we arrange the rooms when check-in but both the rooms are booked under my IHG member account online anyways. The conversation seems annoying her and she suggested to charge one head and the other 2 go with the prepaid room (isn’t is what everybody expect without detail explain at the beginning?) To avoid embarrassing situation again for the next day I went to the front desk to purchase one additional breakfast for the next morning. But the front desk staff suggested not to do because people are often paid but not turn up in the morning and just waste the money. This is very good suggestion and I accepted that. As expected one of us didn’t turn up the next morning and only 2 arrived at around 9:50. The same door staff tell us the breakfast will close very soon so we have to be quick. This is a bit unexpected as we’ve been told the breakfast close at 10:30 on the day before. The staff said this is Sunday arrangement only and today is Monday so its 10:00 as normal. Well, I’m fine to rush for breakfast however, the way she talk is like talking the rules but not providing service. It does disappointed me. I then walk around the food counters and finally decided not to eat as I really not in a mood. So then I just sit down and ask for a cup of tea for both of us. Same as the day before, the tea arrive with no milk and sugar and spoon..also when my wife asked for folk and knife they just like drop them on the table.(both the days). That time I really question myself ‘am I in the Intercon’? And finally I’ve been questioned again which or both of us are in the paid and unpaid room when we leave. Luckly I have managed myself quietly leave the place but not go mad and further embarrassing.
I normally travel to China 4,5 times a year or more and I have been stay in different IHG brands from Holiday-inn express to Incontinental depends on my destination and purpose of the visit. But I really never experienced such service in the past. In future, IHG group will still one of my first choice but unlikely i will come back Intercontinental Shanghai Expo again. This is mainly because the service I received in...
