The maglev ride (day or night) is obviously an unparalleled experience. Even if you are not a railway buff you will enjoy the experience (a little bit, eh?). One can purchase one-way or return tickets. Obviously, I try to avail this service when I am traveling alone because most of my colleagues prefer the chauffeured door-to-door service.
If you are visiting Shanghai (business or pleasure) and cannot converse in Mandarin, please beware of shady ground transportation offers at this station. The management calls these crooks "hobo" persons but nothing is done to keep their criminal conduct in check. These operators will offer a ride to your destination but along the way gouge exorbitant fare with intimidation. This terminal station for the mag-lev ride is in a commercial area. One will obviously need auxiliary ground transportation from this station to a residential area.
In the introductory days, this ride was mainly for the airport travelers but lately I have noticed that airport commuters too take advantage of the short travel duration and "reliability" of...
Read moreIf your comfortable taking public transportation the Maglev is the way to go to get to Shanghai. With speeds up to 250 miles per hour this is a unique ride. It is the more expensive public transportation option to get to Shanghai. You can also take the regular subway which is quick and efficient.
Here are a few tips: You must buy a separate ticket for the Maglev at the ticket window. They only take cash. Credit card and Alipay or WeChat wallet are not accepted. You will find an ATM near the Terminal gate (opposite end of Maglev). I personally would buy a one way ticket as you might choose to take a taxi back or the regular subway.
Follow the crowd to board. The Maglev only has one line. Seats are comfortable and inside you can see the speed your traveling.
Before you get on the Maglev you will see bathrooms, a few food stores, a Starbucks, and other restaurants.
You will have to transfer to get further into Shanghai. This requires a separate metro ticket. You do also have the option of exiting the station and...
Read moreA fairly uninspiring affair compared to HSR in other countries, notably Japan. Although this is the fastest commercial train in the world, it only hits those speed for a short window of service in the afternoon and typically operates around 300kmh.
Definitely the best and fastest way to get from the airport into the city of Shanghai, it is easy to use but unlike other HSR, not particularly beautiful and a relatively bumpy ride which is unexpected.
With the journey only being around 7mins there is little romance in this short transfer. Much more functional then a worthwhile activity in of itself like rail systems in other countries whether HSR or other.
Definitely get it for fast access to the city. The added bonus of experiencing Mag-Lev and the 'on-paper' fastest commercial train system...
