It is a public open area with a public park connects between Nanjing East and Nanjing West. The square is also considered as reference point for both tourists and locals. The square initially was developed british to be a horse race course. During the 1930s, the course was the number one horse race ground in the far eastern. People from all over the world were coming to watch and participate in horse race competitions. As a result, the area around started to boom very quickly and different buildings were developed to offer all services for the visitors. At that time, the most famous building were Park Hotel, the tallest building in 1930s, and the Grand Theatre where movies and Jazz concerts took place. Nowadays, some of the old buildings are still operated and new addition buildings have been developed. The most important attraction on the People’s Square are Park Hotel, Shanghai Museum, The underground mall/bazaar and the People’s Park. Access to the underground metro are scattered among the square and can be found easily. Additionally, the square might be the best spot to ride the sightseeing hop-on hop-off buses.

It feels like a distant memory, China before all the smart phones - taken by a Canon. People’s Square is a major transport hub that draws visitors to Nanjing West Road, a main shopping street with malls offering local fashion and electronics, and food stalls selling kebabs and scallion pancakes. The area is known for landmarks like the Shanghai Museum, with calligraphy scrolls and bronze vessels, and the Shanghai Grand Theatre. Calm, leafy People’s Park is home to the Museum of Contemporary Art. Must visit if you are in Shanghai.

A beautiful place for a stroll. The marriage markets are at the north end on the weekend. Bird feeding is in the middle of the park. Shangai museum is near the south and well worth the visit. There's a huge topiary outside the museum. Numerous kiosks throughout and toilet facilties available. Completely accessible for wheelchairs, although if wheelchair bound people need a toilet I recommend entering the Shangai museum as they have facilties for free.

Every Saturdays and Sundays come here to catch a sight of chinas infamous Marriage Market, located close to the West Nanjing road side, also note you will be approached by parents asking for you to marry one of their children etc. haha. Market also located underground along Metro exit lines with a mini theme park with rides atits centre, no chance of getting lost here too haha

Nice place to stroll around. The landscaped gardens are a real oasis in the city centre. Lots of welcome tree cover on a very hot day. Lots of locals exercising and socialising. Seemed to be some sort of matchmaking event occurring with hundreds of improvised notices around the park. A nice place to get away from it all.

This square where down town Shanghai and visitors go there for strolls or enjoying different types of activities held there on Saturdays and Sundays. Excercises, dancing and especially the umbrella market where mothers and fathers go there to find blind dates for their daughters and sons. Very crowded and interesting.
