Beautiful little water town with lots of history. Expect to do a lot of walking as the streets are a bit of a maze and lots of little stalls to stop at. Great for lots of local foods at a relatively low price (given it is a tourist location). There are paid attractions but the town itself is free to enter. I particularly enjoyed the soy sauce market/shop which sold many local marinated/pickled goods.
Getting to zhujiajiao from shanghai city was relatively simple, albeit a significantly long journey. We too the mtro line 2 from nanjing road to hongqiao airport station, then switched to line 17 to zhujiajiao station. Metro fare was ¥8 one way for an adult. Be reminded that bags need to go through scanning for metros, so leave sharp objects at home. Going into the town, there is the option to hail a ride, rent a bike, or buy a boat ticket. The little boat is 20 min long, ¥40 per person and will take you directly to the middle of the water town, so while pricey, i thought it was worth it.
You can send a postcard to yourself at the post office here (they offer international postage), and also visit some temples dating back to the ming/qing dynasty.
The night view is spectacular along the river, but the streets will be pitch dark (little to no street lights). Store owners are very friendly and will happily guide you to the metro station if asked. A bit of a walk back to the station (maybe 15 min at a brisk walk) but not too bad.
This was one of my favourite tourist spots during my stay in shanghai, so if you like old style buildings/environments, i highly recommend taking the...

I am Dhruv from India, and some other places. I have also lived in Thailand, and in Shanghai, China, for two or three seasons and it is always Autumn and Rainy.
One fine day, My mother and I, when our father was at work, we travelled, by our Car, to Zhujiajiao to see the Ancient Water Town. In Japanese, we say, Mizu Machi. There are many in India, but not so fabulous, or well preserved from old times.
There was a post office museum and the most fabulous, Kung Pao Chicken with Martini, and spicy chili, burnt, and the chili was an aftertaste, and the light sweet like an Oyster. Of course, I eat with Steam Rice, like every Indian ;)*.
This is in my youth. I was 25-26, the year 2017, and I see now, some Restoration is in order, or for our time in some small time. All China is restored, but here, yes, Haii so, I have some small critique.
Oublie as they say in French.
Bless you, all my love, pyaar, from Les Inde.
If you wish to know us in a dish, we are, Saag Paneer. I have had a journey of life. I was born a vegetarian. But I can be a Chicken Saag with some light Masala. I recommend with your own Burnt Chilli with Garlic, and just some Indian spice. A fusion recipe.
Zhujeijao. A vision. A dream. Some might say, as China is in light, maybe such place should fade.

Read moreZhujiajiao Ancient Town is a beautiful place with gardens, narrow streets, bridges, boats and many shops. Line 17 brings you to Zhujiajiao Station, it's almost a 40 minute ride from Hongqiao Railway Station. When arriving with the metro, it's still a 30 minute walk to the entrance of the ancient town. There are maps and signs around the town to guide you there. You can also take a bus or even a boat. First of all, I'd recommend to buy the package/combination ticket for 60RMB per person. You'll be able to visit Kezhi Garden, The Garden Of Inseparable Hearts, and Shanghai Helong Art Gallery. It wasn't too crowded when I visited in the winter, but I can't imagine how busy these narrow streets can get in the spring or summer. There are so many places to get a drink or eat some food, so I also recommend staying at Zhujiajiao until it gets dark and the lights start to ignite. The sunset can also be very picturesque, so keep an eye on the time and the place you want to be to get these photos at the perfect time. Yuanjin Temple is a great place to get a nice view of the ancient town of Zhujiajiao, because it allows you to go the first floor and walk around...
