Many years ago, alongside tabacon there used to exist a reasonably priced thermal river/spa that shut down for unknown reasons. Now it's back open, and very nice. I have been to tabacon, the "free" river and now the newly opened "choyin". It's very nice, and completely reasonable for 9000 colones. While the "free river" is still open, but harder to access now, it's worth the price to have easy access, a hot swimming pool, bathrooms and showers to rinse off. There are only a few small improvements I would like the owners to make.
Easier accessible stairs, and a railing to go into the river.
Trimming some of the trees by the river back. A bit too overgrown. For instance there is a huge fallen tree in the river. Personally, i think it's cool, but should be removed, as it takes up a bunch of space in the river.
Otherwise it's very nice. Not as nice or as big as tabacon, but still great. For me tabacon is very expensive, and while amazing, is still something I would not go to regularly. The "free river" while free, is difficult to access, and while completely natural, still is not as nice. Why not try a 3rd option (choyin) where they will bring you a beer for 2000 colones, while in the river. Again, this is not free (like the river) but completely reasonable pricing. Good job. I'll be back, and...
Read moreWe were needlessly concerned that, being a Sunday, Choyin Rio Termal would be packed, but, having prebooked we arrived at ten promptly and had the place to ourselves for a good hour. Staff were friendly and welcoming, very keen to make sure we knew our way around. Everything is clean and tidy and it is really helpful to have good wifi (to get UBER back to La Fortuna), lockers and dry towels as needed. The food offerings are also very good value - for just over £9 extra we had a delicious 2 course typical Costa Rican meal (Casado and dessert) with fresh fruit juice. There was also a snack menu which is published on the website. Staff will also run a "tab" and bring drinks, including cocktails to the poolside for you which is a nice touch. Being able to have the convenience of a warm pool and sunbeds and the natural experience of rock bathing in a thermal river was a real draw for us and Choyin Riu Thermal exceeded our...
Read moreWe visited Choyin Rio Termal based on a tip from a friend whoâs from Costa Rica - and our entire family of 6 absolutely loved it! Itâs on a beautiful section of the naturally heated river and felt very safe being there with our kids. Before we purchased, William gave us a tour, explaining what the price included, and was very considerate, honest, and not at all pushy. If youâre only looking to go for a very short time it may not be worth it, but we went for the day pass + lunch option and made a full day of it. In the afternoon we did the heated river, full lunch, and hot tub - and they let us use our day pass bracelets to return in the evening for a beverage of choice (included in the price) plus another dip in the heated river after dark. An incredible, very unique experience that our family will always remember....
