Awful. The guide was not a guide. He was a farmer who rode horses. Told us we all had to "run" with the horse or "trot." I asked if I could just walk. I am taking horseback riding lessons, but the arrogant guide said I "had to make the horse run because it was a "long ride. " He shouted, whistled, and made the horse run. He also whipped them. I know how to handle a horse a little bit, so I pulled her back several times and did not let her run. The guide got angry with me and told me to stop doing it and that "I needed to make her run, because it was a long trek." It wasn't a long trek. The guide was just arrogant and lazy. He was so mad at me, he then ignored me and only spoke to the other people in our group. He shouted at me at the horse parking space at the volcano and then said that we were all taking a hike up the volcano. I was so upset that I stayed behind. When the grpup came back down, he ignored me, laughed at me, and told me to get back on the horse. The ride down was steep, and he told me to "move faster. " .. I did, but he wasn't satisfied, even though I was right behind the next rider. He took my horse by the leash and tried to make my horse gallop down the volcano. I pulled her back and asked him to stop. He said he would not as we had to be faster. He was a bully. Made even more stressful and upsetting as I was a female solo traveler. It is horrid to experience this kind of behavior and have nobody to talk to about it. When we got back to the "so-called stables," he ignored me in front of the rest of the group. So I left. It was a horrid experience of being led by an arrogant, ignorant guide. And my last day of otherwise many fabulous experiences with other professional guides. It's left a bad memory for me of Costa Rica, unfortunately. My hotel said they would do something about it. We will see. Just do not use this company. Horrid, look at the photos I took of where the horses are whipped! I took these photos when we were resting at the volcano, and the others went off in a short hike. Our guide was ignorant and arrogant, but it seems like this might be the MO of...
Read moreWe went on the atv’s in the morning and the trip was great as was our guide. The meluka tribe tribe stop was blatant money grab and the lady From the tribe was having an on off day which she wanted everyone to know about. Still a great experience and I would definitely wholehearted recommend. 9.5/10
Unfortunately that’s where the good takes a nose dive.
Later that day we went zip lining with two other groups and I have to say these were easily some of the rudest and pushiest guides I’ve even encountered in my travels around the world. We were treated like cattle. Manhandled when instructions weren’t followed within a millisecond. Feigned compassion and the fakest smiles while they shoved you aside or pushed you down the line while you were in the middle of asking a safety question. Absolutely brutal and ruined what could’ve been an amazing experience as it was an incredibly beautiful landscape. David and Esteban were particularly horrible. Only one of the seven guides was decent. The European couple along with us agreed. The lady was shocked and said she’d never met a rude tico before these people. The Indian couple also had some choice words and confronted them about their obvious contempt for their job and especially their clients. He asked then point blank what the matter was? Why are you pushing us so quickly and being so rude? No client should have to ask this. The idea of having these inconsiderate and arrogant crew take your life in their hands is a nightmare. Run. Don’t walk. Run. And the way they pushed for the camera package was also brutal. Apparently a simple No thank you doesn’t suffice. They push and push and then lay on a guilt trip. And top it all off these clowns has the nerve to ask for a tip and a good review with a straight face like we all hadn’t experienced the worst service ever. You’d be hard pressed to train people to treat people worse if you tried. It takes talent to be that rude. Clearly lots of experience. I wouldn’t use any of their services if you’d paid me top dollar....
Read moreTourist trap, typical treating of English speaking foreigners from the US to rip them off. Our group booked a 3 hours ATV tour, started the ride, at the first stop that we arrived, the guide told us that our trip was booked for only 2 hours instead of 3 and that it was a misunderstanding. He asked for us to pay extra in order to do the additional one hour. We refused because it cost a little too much for us. The rest of the trip we were rushed to get back to the starting point. the Maleku village tour is actually just a hut in the jungle that sells incredibly expensive painted balsa wood art. It is not an actual village. We were supposed to go to a river to take a bath and relax in it for a little while, instead we were told to hurry up and only wash our faces so that we could quickly leave. Everyone was quite upset and disappointed. Upon our arrival at the starting point to drop off the ATV, a member of our group had his smart watch and recorded the duration of the trip from when we left. The 2 hour trip that they claimed we had, actually turned out to be 1 hour and 40 minutes. Those extra 20 minutes could have been great at the river, instead of being rushed. The places that we went through with the ATV was pretty nice, and if we wouldn’t have been taken for fools, we would have recommended it to other friends. All in all, I gave 2 stars because the trails are beautiful, but the customer service is garbage. If you are ok with being taken for idiot tourists then by all means go get ripped off by these folks. Otherwise, I recommend the Original Arenal ATV tour. I went there as well and i was treated fairly and with respect, and the experience...
