Wonderful place! A delight to sit and have a latte and a snack while you watch dozens and dozens of hummingbirds. The food is good, we shared a cheese empanada and a delicious savory potato pastry. The ladies try to be helpful and friendly despite having a lot of people to serve. When we were there, the staff spoke very little english, and I was still working on my spanish, and so I wasn't certain if I misunderstood, but they seem to only take cash, and they don't usually give receipts. I asked for one, and they complied-- but seemed a little frustrated as it slowed down the line behind me having to hand write out the receipt. -- so try to have enough spanish when you go that you don't need things written down like I did!
The place is very busy-- but once you go, you'll understand. The pastries and cakes looked incredible and I regret that our plan to return and try those didn't happen this trip.

But watch out-- they can be territorial-- one lady got too close trying to take a picture, and the little buzzers had no problem chasing her back and away. They are fearless! Mostly, however, they're oblivious to the tourists, and the many tour guides there describing the various ones. If you go, do try to wear a shirt with large, colorful flower on it- and sit still on one of the benches. You may be rewarded with a curious bird coming to see if you are a real flower with...

Read moreWe just spent 2 weeks in Costa Rica and this may have been our favorite experience from the whole trip (and it was free)! There are several hummingbird feeders outside of a cafe and there are constantly all different types of hummingbirds flying in and out of the area. You can get crazy close to the feeders and the birds which makes for an amazing experience, especially if you are wanting to take some pictures and videos. If you're in Monteverde, you have to...
