A visit to the volcano Irazu is definently worth it when there is clear weather. The view itself was good except for the fact that you could not see the bottom of the crator. When you arrive at the parking lot there will be a restaurant, restrooms and a path leading to the lookout point. The lookout point is very sandy and there is a long wooden fence all around the crator . Also dont forget to take a light jacket because it can be cold and windy. Keep in mind that if it is cloudy you won't be able to see any thing. If you have time and you are staying near San Jose I would defenently recommend...

We had to wait for over a hour to get through the entrance, only one person working at the entrance, but 3 guards hired to overlook the parking lot. They could have opened a second line at the entrance, at least on Sundays. If you want to see the beautiful crater lake, you have to climb the fence, which is prohibited, of course. And if you want to visit the Poas volcano, do not check the national park administration web site. They still don't know that they closed their park...

The view from the top of the crater is spectacular, as is the drive up. We went in mid-May and got there by 8:30am to beat the crowds and view-obscuring heavy mist.
