This is one of the oldest Marian shrines in Croatia. According to legend, in 1291, the Holy House of Nazareth, believed to be the home of the Holy Family, was miraculously transported by angels to Trsat. In 1294, it was said to have been moved again to Loreto, Italy, where a major Marian shrine now stands. In 1367, Pope Urban V gifted the Trsat sanctuary a revered icon of the Mother of Mercy, which continues to attract devotion from countless pilgrims to this day. The sanctuary showcases a blend of architectural styles—Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Biedermeier—as a result of centuries of renovations and expansions. Adjacent to the church is a Franciscan monastery, founded in the 13th century, which has also undergone multiple restorations to reach its present form. Trsat is considered one of the most important pilgrimage sites in western Croatia, drawing large numbers of pilgrims and visitors every year. The site is especially vibrant on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, when major celebrations take place.
