This stairway was built in 1531 by Petar Kružić, a Croatian military leader, and was originally intended as a pilgrimage route leading to the Church of Our Lady of Trsat. The staircase consists of 561 stone steps and ascends to the Trsat Hill, which rises 138 meters above sea level. At the base of the stairs is a baroque-style arched entrance, built in the early 18th century, reminiscent of a small triumphal arch.
