TRSAT FORTRESS “KAŠTEL TRSAT” adorns a 138 m high hill above the Riječina gorge and the city of Rijeka. First mentioned in 1288, it is one of the oldest fortresses on the Croatian littoral. It was built by the Frankopans from Krk who remained lords of the fortress until the end of the 15th century, when Prince Stjepan Frankopan left the estate to his cousin, the Hungarian-Croatian king Martin Corvinus, who thus gained access to the sea. The victory of Frederick III of Habsburg over Corvinus in 1485 made the fortress a hereditary property of the Habsburg dynasty. In 1778, empress Maria Theresa exempted Trsat from Habsburg possessions and handed it over to the newly established city municipality - the Bakar District. Poor maintenance and a catastrophic earthquake in 1750 turned the fortress into ruins. In 1826, the Austrian field marshal count Laval Nugent purchased the ruins of the Trsat Fort from the Bakar municipality for an annual payment of one florint and entrusted the renovation to the Italian builder Paronuzzi, who renovated the fort in the...
