The Holy Church of the Virgin Mary Angeloktisti (“Built by the Angels”) in Kiti is one of Cyprus’s most remarkable Byzantine monuments, celebrated for both its architectural beauty and its legendary origin. Dating back to the 11th century, the church is said to have been miraculously completed by angels, according to local tradition — a story that gives the site its evocative name.
What sets this church apart is its extraordinary Byzantine mosaic of the Virgin Mary and Child, one of the finest and best-preserved examples in the Eastern Mediterranean. This masterpiece, crafted in shimmering gold and glass, stands as a timeless testament to early Christian art and devotion.
The church itself combines Byzantine and later medieval elements, built of warm local stone with elegant arches and a peaceful, intimate interior filled with icons and sacred artworks. Surrounded by a tranquil courtyard and the remains of an earlier basilica, it offers visitors a sense of deep serenity and connection to Cyprus’s spiritual heritage.

Dozens of Byzantine icons decorate walls, including a stunning representation of Saint Michael that won first prize at an icon exhibition in Paris. A nearby kiosk sells postcards, booklets, and souvenirs related to the church at reasonable prices. This church is definitely worth visiting if...
