I had very good experiences birdwatching in this park. I was often alone on the trails and noticed that other locals were too. Lots of student groups, young women jogging, people with fancy mountain bikes, etc. so seeing their confidence made me feel safe. Still the risk of getting robbed is real (some very cautious locals warned me of such risk) so I didn't bring my big camera just binoculars and an old cell phone. The eucalyptus plantation doesn't have the biotic diversity of native forest but many species of grass and shrub loving birds thrive here. The views are great and it's just nice to experience the peace of wild things with easy walking access to much of the city. My favorite part was the narrow trails along the steep slope on the east side but those can be extremely slippery when it rains so wear shoes with good treads if you're using the side trails.
