Atop Vallimägi Hill stands the ruins of Schloss Wesenberg, or as it is known today, Rakvere Order Castle. Until the 13th century, an ancient Estonian hillfort called Tarvanpää stood here. This fortress was conquered by the Danes in 1238, who almost immediately began building a (partly) stone castle, one of the three main military fortifications of the Danish Duchy of Estonia. In 1268, Novgorod troops attempted to capture the fortress during the Battle of Wesenberg but were unsuccessfully defeated. The St. George's Night Uprising on April 23, 1343, heralded a series of Estonian uprisings against the Danes that lasted until 1345 and ultimately led to the sale of the Duchy of Estonia to the Livonian Order in 1346. The Order further expanded the castle, a process that lasted until the 16th century, and established a bailiff (the highest military, judicial, and administrative authority in a region) there. In the first year of the Livonian War (1558–1583), the Russians captured Rakvere Castle without much difficulty. Tsar Ivan IV ordered the outdated castle to be expanded and adapted to modern firearms-based warfare. In the spring of 1574, the Swedish army, including many Scottish and German mercenaries, besieged the castle, but due to a escalating dispute between the Scots and Germans, the siege failed. In February/March 1581, the Swedes again besieged the castle and this time succeeded in capturing it. Because the castle was severely damaged during these sieges, it was renovated and immediately modernized. In 1602, during the Swedish-Polish War (1600-1611), Polish troops captured the castle through a ruse, only to lose it to the Swedes again three years later. Both Polish and Swedish troops blew up the castle, thus losing its military importance. Since 2002, the castle has housed a branch of the Virumaa Museums Foundation and has been open as a museum and interactive...

The ruins of Rakvere Castle are magnificent, with well-restored fortress walls strong enough to withstand some climbing. However, be cautious during winter climbs as it can be slightly dangerous, and it's fully at your own responsibility Enjoyable exploration of multiple inner rooms reveals surprises. In the Hall of Swords, you can try realistic replicas spanning from the 10th to the 19th centuries. Ramified passages and galleries are well interconnected. The Alchemy Hall/room of science houses some interesting artifacts. Every few hours, fascinating excursions take place, such as visits to the torture chamber or the room of science, where you hear wonderful stories about the life, death, and beliefs of medieval European cities' populations. In the middle of the castle, a nice farmyard with sheep, goats, rabbits, geese, and even a wonderful donkey has been established. Nearby, there are informative tables discussing the relationship between the Brothel and expression of Love in the medieval population.-) Additionally, there's a very nice and atmospheric eating place where, for 3 euros, you can enjoy a warm and delightful glass of...

We spent 3(!) action-packed amazing hours at Rakvere Castle, complete with medieval experiences - from cannon being shot to swordfights to trying our hand at archery & enjoying a practical lecture in alchemy. There was a handicrafts spot where kids & grownups alike can try pottery & candle-making as well as making their own coin in the smithy. In terms of food - there is a lovely cafe with a simple, affordable & tasty range of 1 soup-main-dessert. There were also stationery horses with pulleys for kids, a challenge track with swinging pillows, a giant chess board & opportunity to roam the whole castle & wall passages. Recommended to visit with kids - family ticket 22€ & all inside activities are included. Some announcements can be very loud & startle smaller visitors, but the cannon shot wasn’t as bad as the humorous warnings by the guards. Ended up buying 2 wooden swords on our way out (good prices and varying stages of ready-made) - the souvenir shop/ticket office was awesome. Staff are very welcoming & we enjoyed our experience very much - if I could give it 6 🌟, I would. Thank you!♥️
