A place rich in history. Where locals can pray and fast. Had the honor of meeting one of the oldest nuns(90yrs) another guide said. The church is just beautiful. Minilk II(Menilek II)'s palace on top of the hill offers a breathtaking view of the city Addis Ababa (New Flower) his wife Empress Taitu discovered in 1886. In the same grounds are the first church (a small whitewashed roundavel, a olden day mortuary for the royals, banquet hall and a museum. Most of the original materials that were used to building the palace has been maintained. The first imported eucalyptus tree (yellow line in pics) still stands in the palace grounds to this day.The museum offers a lot of the royal memorabilia from clothes, drinking cups , weapons and Bibles. The first brass bell said to weigh 300kgs is also housed in the museum. However, medals won by present day Ethiopian runners and some modern day generals' regalia have been donated to the church and are also in the museum.

Gorgeous drive up the mountain. Beautiful, peaceful location. Small museum in the compound. Can visit the original place where Emperor Menelik II resided and built his simple palace. Roof made of cowhide and bamboo. Recommend going with a guide to benefit from the full history.

メネリク2世はアディスアベバに都を遷都した時にはこの地に王宮をつくり居住した。いわばアディスアベバの歴史の原点が、この場所だ。 マリアム教会の裏手に広がる旧王宮。メネリク2世はアディスアベバに遷都した後、現在も残るこれらの建物に居住した。 タクシーの運転手にはエントット山に訪れる前に旧王宮があると聞いていたのでどんなに華やかなものが残っているのかと、かなり期待していた。 しかし訪れてみるととても王宮とは思えないほど、貧しい民家のような建物が残り、その一部は孤児院としても利用されている。 アディスアベバ最初の王宮に建つエチオピア十字。小さくて分かりにくいが、十字架の先が大きく膨らんでおり、とても特徴的で、ヨーロッパの十字架と大きく異なる。 宮殿内部にはダイニングルームがてんじされている。皇帝とはいえ、ヨーロッパや日本の皇室と比べるとはるかに質素な生活をしていたのだろう。 メネリク2世の寝室があった建物はエチオピアの元首がこんな建物に住んでいるのを目の当たりにすると、1896年にあのイタリア軍によく完勝したと思ってしまう。イタリアって戦争に弱いイメージが強かったが、なんかますますそう感じてしまった。
