"The Bobby at the Market Square" è così che viene denominata da alcuni la statua di bronzo che si trova nella piazza del mercato coperto di Oulu. La statua, che rappresenta il poliziotto della piazza, " Toripollisi" in finlandese, è alta 2,20 metri e sembra ricordare alcune opere di Botero. É diventata una vera e propria icona e tutti scattano delle foto accanto ad essa. É stata realizzata dallo scultore Kaarl Mikkonen e collocata nella piazza nel 1987 nell' area accanto allo storico edificio, in mattoni rossi risalente al 1901, che è stato recentemente ristrutturato. Sembra che il poliziotto, a cui la statua é stata dedicata, che aveva prestato servizio di pattugliamento in quella zona per quarantacinque anni dal 1934 al 1979 mantenga con la sua imponente presenza l' ordine e assicuri la sicurezza delle transazioni del mercato. Molti sostengono che Oulu é una cittadina molto tranquilla e quindi basta una statua per assicurare il rispetto della legge. Quando ho visitato quest' area il mercato era chiuso, non ho quindi potuto pranzare al suo interno o prendere un caffè e gustare alcune specialità di pane e i piatti a base di salmone o carne di renna, né acquistare alcuni prodotti tipici locali. Il mercato è aperto dalle ore 8: 00 alle 17:00, tutti i giorni ad eccezione della domenica. Il sabato chiude alle ore 16:00. L'area intorno alla piazza è animata e i bar e i ristoranti della zona sono molto frequentati soprattutto dai giovani. In estate intorno al mercato coperto si possono trovare tante bancarelle che vendono prodotti tipici, oggetti di artigianato finlandese...

Kahviloissa on tarjolla muutakin purtavaa mutta omaan silmään valikoimat ja palvelupisteet ovat likaisia. Löytyy juottoloita joissa kalliit hinnat ja talojen paukku mikstuurat alkoholi pitoisuudeltaan teini juottolan tasoa. Iltaisin voi nähdä paikallista trupaduuri esiintymistä joka on hieno plussa. Nuoriso kokoontuu nakki ja piirakka rallille torin laiturille iltaisin, porukkaa on todella paljon ja sanoisin hyväksi illan aloituspaikaksi. Sitten on kirpputorit ja joitain erikoiskauppoja tupakasta kahviin ja tee:hän. Rihkaman myyntiä ja kopio bändi paitoja löytyy myös parista kojusta. Kaiken kaikkiaan sekava paikka ja sotkuinen.
