The hospitality was sensational. When we arrived with our wine tour guide, we were greeted in a large open tasting room by our host, whose name escapes me at the moment. She explained how their wine is produced, in impeccable detail, and like my other Château visits, spoke of the wine making process in immersive detail.
Saint-Émilion is not peppered with princess-like Châteaux. They are mostly modern, stylish and immaculately appointed with rustic accoutrement, such as vaulted ceilings, grand fireplaces, and gorgeous woodwork everywhere.
The Bordeaux was sensational. We tasted their Château Ferrand, which is 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet franc and absolutely delicious. I believe we tasted a 2018, but it was fruity, medium dry, smokey and leathery. Loved its subtle tannins and lingering finish. I brought some sliced Filet Mignon and a couple of cheese I picked up during our lunch stop at Saint-Émilion. What a lovely pairing. Although our guide, Angie and the winery's host, both agreed, almost in unison, that the bottle combined beautifully with dark chocolate, which I agreed with. We tried two other wines, one of which is they're flagship La Fleur Ferrand. Again, I am unsure of the year and not because it didn't matter to me, but because we tried so much wine all day, that I simply forget. But what I didn't forget is the taste. Wow! La Fleur Ferrand lives up to the pre-pour hype. Silky, smooth, velvety even, La Fleur Ferrand is a delight. Light on its feet, but finishes bigger than one would think. A pure Merlot, this wonderful find casts a mighty shadow over US Merlots I have personally tasted. Plum, tobacco, smokey accents and gentle, but pronounced tannins.
This humble wine maker in this storied part of the wine-making world is why we drink wine. Charming, modest, but deadly serious about producing sensational, full-bodied bordeaux and if you bring your own portable charcuterie, well, you'll have...
Read moreI recently visited Pomerol and had such an excellent time. Marion was a brilliant host, her English was great and her knowledge of the wine making process was very impressive. Marion was able to answer all of my questions and had a wealth of knowledge about the history of the chateau. I tasted 3 wines and Marion took the time to educate me on the best way to smell and taste the wines. This was an excellent experience and I would...
