Musée Soulages — Attraction in Rodez

We just left the museum, feeling more frustrated than anything. Half of the scenography is so stupid! Some rooms are very dark and his work is behind glass panels most of the time. It is only lit by terribly oriented spotlights, creating a huge amount of reflection that completely ruins your appreciation for his work.

Honestly they couldn't have gone for a worst scenographic choice.

However, his work is still fascinating and the collection is quite generous.

I just hope to rethink their lighting plan...

The museum itself is an impressive modern building which blends in well with it's surroundings in the town of Rodez. The works of Soulage are fascinating espeically how he came to destruture the standards of art in his time. Definitely worth the visit. Definitive collection of his severe, strong work, the prints alone are worth the visit. Substantial side gallery for temporary exhibitions. Small shop focused on Soulages. Classy contemporary building also contains original cafe and restaurant run by Bras. In park 200m from Rodez cathedral and old town, parking at multiplex next door.
