Alte Saline — Attraction in Bad Reichenhall

Booked the combined ticket for the mines in Berchtesgaden and the salt works in Bad Reichenall online. You must then start with the mines before the ticket is valid for the works, but it stays valid for the works for a whole year once validated at the mines. It’s a 30+ minute bus ride between the two. Use bus 841 in both directions. Mines are a 20 minute walk from stop Berchtesgaden Zentrum and the works are a 5 minute walk from stop Tiroler Tor in Bad Reichenall. It’s all doable by bus in a day without stress. Parking good at mines but less so at the works. Mines are a laugh with slides, train rides, boat ride and funicular. They provide audio guides for non German speakers. Relatively relaxed. The works is a much smaller affair and more industrial, but still interesting. The tour is exclusively in German with the option of a printout if you can’t follow the language. As a side note, if you have chatty small kids, perhaps reconsider the works part - guide clearly didn’t like the background noise from a wee German kid when doing her bit and perhaps it’s not the done thing here! Beeindruckende Alte Saline in Bad Reichenhall - Einblick in die Geschichte der Salzgewinnung

Am 2. Mai 2023 besuchten wir die Alte Saline in Bad Reichenhall und waren beeindruckt von diesem historischen Ort. Die mächtige Pumpanlage, bestehend aus imposanten Wasserrädern mit einem Durchmesser von 13 Metern und einem Gewicht von 15 Tonnen, fördert seit über 150 Jahren ununterbrochen die Sole aus dem Brunnenschacht. Die Räder werden von oben mit Wasser angetrieben und arbeiten wie Mühlenräder, wobei das Antriebswasser auf die 92 Schaufeln jedes Rades geleitet wird.

Es war faszinierend zu erfahren, dass die Salzgewinnung in dieser Region bis in die Bronzezeit zurückreicht, wie die Ausstellung im Museum zeigt. Die Alte Saline selbst hat eine lange Geschichte, die bis ins Jahr 2000 v. Chr. zurückreicht. Eine weitere interessante Information war, dass das heutige Reichenhall während der Römerzeit für 500 Jahre zum Römischen Reich gehörte.

Besonders beeindruckend war das Glockenzeichen, das bei jeder Umdrehung eines Rades ertönt und dem Brunnwart den regelmäßigen Gang der Anlage anzeigt. Das Sole-Hebewerk ist ein faszinierendes Zeugnis des technischen Fortschritts und der langen Geschichte der Salzgewinnung in der Region.

Die Ausstellung zeigt auch die verschiedenen Phasen der Salzgewinnung, wie etwa das Salzsieden in der Eisenzeit, und beinhaltet Nachbildungen von Fundstücken aus der Römerzeit. Die Originale befinden sich in der Prähistorischen Staatssammlung in München.
