"Schnecke!" My mother cried as we peered upon the mystical creature on the ground. She has been learning duo lingo for many months now and schnecke was her favourite word but she felt saddened that she probably wouldn't have a context to use it in. Thus her day has been made.
We explored this glorious farm with a few local German friends who all crumbled to their knees when we stumbled upon "the most famous person in Germany". My mother and I lost our shit also because it appeared like the correct social thing to do at the time.
This person was taking photos amongst the scenery and our kids were chasing each other and there were butterflies everywhere. My baby was shirtless as taking her shirt off and on is her current obsession. Good at farms, not so good in public buses. She's currently getting into taking her pants off too. She understands that clothes are just a social construct. She does what she wants and I don't pretend to be able to have a handle on that situation.
I feel I'll be hearing about this schnecke for the rest of my days..in fact I'm starting to suspect that she ran ahead and planted it there so we could spot it and she could impress our new German friends. I wouldn't put it past her. And schnecke is a good word to use because you can't bloody well do that with a 200kg cow can you.
This truly was a splendid place and I feel full of warm feelings and delight after my experience...
Read moreA wonderful farm without leaving Berlin, with animals, vegetables, an orchard and also a hands-on museum with lots of activities for kids (and adults!) to learn: how to make thread with wool, how to knit a flower crown, how to paint ceramics, how to sort grains, harvest your own seasonal vegetables and feed the farm animals. They have lots of festivals and activities during the year, in which case, there’s a small entrance fee for adults. On other days, the entrance fee is lower and follows the honor system (a machine gives you a ticket at the door). There’s a restaurant as well as lots of areas for a picnic. A wonderful place to spend a whole afternoon! My 3 and 5 year olds loved harvesting potatoes and then roasting them in an open fire in the field! Walking distance from two U3 Bahn stations: Dahlem Dorf (back entrance, closer to the field and animals) or Podbielskiallee (main entrance, closer to the museum and restaurant). We will be...
Read moreA trip on the bus or the U3, Domäne Dahlem is a manor house and rural museum on the southwestern fringe of the city.
The oldest architecture in the manor goes back to the 1560s, while the land on its grounds has been farmed for more than 800 years.
Naturally Domäne Dahlem is just the setting for a museum about traditional agriculture and nutrition, dealing with its topics in a smart, creative way.
In the stables is the Culinarium, in which three floors of interactive exhibits and multimedia explain the history of nutrition in Europe, and where our food comes from today.
In the manor house there’s a recreation of a shop from the Renaissance, where a hologram merchant will assist you, and in the grounds is a real blacksmith’s forge and...
