Visit on Halloween (31. October) Here a detailed review:
-Arrival: The park is easy accessible from the main highway. The parking fee though is 8 euros, which is not cheap.
-Ticketing: I bought the park admission, car park ticket and the halloween attractions online. I decided to buy the hotel + park admission ticket, which was around 110 euros. Note that the park has no hotel, so I stayed at the Elaya hotel in Oberhausen (30min drive). If you plan on doing the popular halloween attractions, buy them at least 1 week prior, also mind that they can get expensive (paid 15 euros for Hell House).
The park: So as an adult visitor the park has a bit more than a handfull of interesting rides. The park is not that big and feels like a smaller Universal-like movie themed park at a smaller budget. The park lacks some kind of large scale signature coaster in my opinion. There is stuff to do for people of all ages, but the halloween festival is clearly only for adults. Some parts and rides feel outdated and some look great and new. Also some of the restrooms were really disgusting with penetrating odors. Despite the many non smoking signs I also smelled a lot of tobacco everywhere, especially at night.
Attractions: I arrived at 11:30 in the park and had enough time with no stress to ride all major thrill rides. All rides had a 10-45min wait, and waits increased towards the evening. Still the crowds were not too bad for ot being Halloween night. Here a brief review of all major rides and the Halloween attractions I did: -Iron Claw: This is a standard SLC coaster. I actually enjoyed the ride, even though at some moments there is headbanging. Its not as bad as many say. At night it was even more fun. -Bandit: This ride is way worse than Iron Claw. It is very rough and the layout it pretty weak. Its cool if you like the out of control feeling though. Surprisingly people really liked it and it had longer waits -Van Helsings Factory: This ride really surprised me. Its very well themed, it has storytelling and cool effects. -Studio Tour: Its a bit short but also very well themed and immersive. -Jimmy Neutron's Atomic Flyer: Short but fun little family coaster, which is very smooth -Star Trek: The queue line has good theming but during the ride the is none. The ride is fun, especially with the swing launch but very short. -High Fall (freefall tower): Cool idea with the bicycle-like seats. Also pretty intense for its shorter size. Its cool at night -Area 51: Surprisingly well themed dark ride with 2 (rather tame) drops. My boat sadly had 2cm water standing inside.
Halloween: They really did a good job with the lighting, fog machines, actors, projectors, theming and even a DJ for the night. They had lots of cocktail and beer stands, which was great. Sadly I also witnessed someone getting delivered to the hospital. The idea with the time slots for the horror mazes is great but it also forces you to book far in advance and you cannot do all in 1 evening. I could do 4 if I wanted but ended up doing 3 to avoid stress. Here are the ones I made: -Hell House (horror maze): Very immersive experience with good storytelling, great theming and cool actors. Loved that they added some parts that needed crawling or sliding. Sadly the most expensive maze. -Circus freaks (horror maze): This one has no storyline but therefore has a more exciting/fun ambience with great music as well, it also includes a little spinning ride at the end. -Slaughterhouse (horror maze): Also has storytelling and very nice theming. I really enjoyed it. Sadly there was one mishap: my ticket was faulty and the scanner said it was already used. I later went to customer service and they were really nice and gave me a replacement ticket to the attraction.
Verdict: quality halloween attractions and ambience nice themed indoor coasters nice customer service ~ waits were not long during the day but increased at the evening doing a lot of halloween mazes can be pricey has very rough rides and lacks a tall...
Read moreIt's overall a pretty decent theme park, it's just sad because it could be so much better, but it just has too many bad things that let down the overall experience. And I'm writing this after having visited on a pretty empty day, with long queues my experience would've been significantly worse. And it was also during the halloween event, without it and the couple of halloween-exlusive shows and 3 haunted houses I did my visit would've felt significantly less full and more disapointing and less worth the travelling time.
Good: Area 51 is a great themed ride, you should do it even if you don't want to get wet. Excalibur is apparently also similiarly good, but that was sadly closed. The studio tour and van helsing are both nicely done. Both lean more towards "themed dark ride" than "coaster", so don't be disappointed if the roller coaster forces themselves are not that much, that's not what these rides are about Time riders is a pretty cool experience, but a bit old, and made worse by all the people that already know what will happen and run and get a better position than you. Makes it unnecessarily stressful and annoying The stunt show is well made. The story itself and the acting is as almost always with theme park shows pretty bad, but the rest and also the pre-show with the live camera feed is cool, recommended to come 15 minutes early otherwise you miss that part The flat ride "Side Kick" is really good, the drop tower is also pretty nice, and the top spin can be cool, but that one is sadly so much worse both in terms of theming and in the ride itself than the nearby Talocan at Phantasialand that it doesn't compare in the slightest Halloween-exlusive: The haunted house "Slaughterhouse" was pretty good, that one was actually kinda worth the 8€ unlike the other houses, and the free Stage hypnosis show was interesting to see once and well made, but this type of show just felt wrong and unethical to me.
Bad: All the attractions I listed under "Good" are not standout, none of them are masterpieces like you would have at e.g. the nearby Phantasialand. And the rest of the attractions except star trek are really bad, especially the 2 big coasters "Iron Claw" (Vekoma SLC...) and "Bandit" (famous for being one of the worst wooden coasters in the world) This park has many really ugly areas and also almost no places that look actually good, at most they look decent The park very noticeably tries their hardest to make more money by making the visitor experience worse: most coasters run only 1 train even when they have a pretty long queue, the food is bad and expensive and the various, heavily promoted speedy pass options to cut in line in front of other guests are disgusting. And it's not a "skip one line once" like it is at some other parks which is less bad, here it's "skip every single line once" or even "skip all lines always". And most of the big attractions only opened way later in the day, I can't imagine all of them did that for technical reasons, I have to assume the park just cheaped out and/or wanted to sell more speedy passes because they know that exactly these attractions would get decently long lines even on an emptier day if they only openend at e.g. 14:00 instead of 10:00 the bags aren't nearly as safe here during a ride as in other theme parks, I constantly felt like I had to worry that it will be stolen which I never before had at other parks. there's a far too high percentage of teenagers instead of families in this park, annoying crowd simply things like toilets that are dirtier than at other theme parks and a website that has a bunch of bugs Halloween-exclusive: the haunted house "murder museum" was bad and "hellhouse" was ok, and far too big group sizes, both not worth the 10€/15€. The monster parade was extremely short, don't waste your time waiting a long time in a good spot for it. The mapping show seemingly didn't happen when I was there, but watching it on youtube it doesn't...
