Really impressive gallery for modern art. The museum does not have a permanent exhibition but offers two temporary exhibitions that switch about every six months. One exhibition mainly focuses on the artworks that Marli Hoppe-Ritter has collected (so works from the depot) - the other exhibition adds artworks from artists that get borrowed from other galleries or the artists themselves.
I am by all means not an art lover but usually just accompany my wife who is more interested. Usually, it's easier for me to become fascinated by art that I can understand - exquisite paintings, in which even a layman can understand the meaning or finesse.
Now, the art displayed in this museum mainly focuses around geometry and clear lines - and most often is connected somehow to the concept of a square or cube - which makes sense, given how Ritter Sport chocolate has been using the square shape for their chocolates for a long time now.
For understanding the context and the artworks, there are two options. One being the audio guide that covers a good deal of the exhibited artworks. On top of that, there's also a guided tour (but only rarely) which gives a bit extra information about the building as well. We had the guided tour and our guide, a freelance art historian, did a terrific job explaining. I really enjoyed the museum and I'm certain I will be back in some time to check out the new exhibitions.
Parking behind the museum is easy (plenty of space) and free of cost. The whole museum is easily accessible, with an elevator allowing access to the top floor, if you do not want to take the stairs leading up. The toilets are clean and in everything feels modern and in good shape. The service staff was very friendly...
Read moreThis review is for the Rittersport museum and shop only. Knew from the start that this was just a small museum exhibition about rittersport, it was as described although a bit smaller than expected. Just a singular floor that takes about 5 minutes to look around, main attraction is the shop which has some great deals on defective or near expiry chocolates.
It's fine but I would not suggest making a big effort to come, good for a small detour or stop over unless you're mainly coming to buy chocolate, it has big stop floor which is ideal for that. Came on a Thursday which means entrance is free, €7 otherwise which is expensive for what you get.
If any of the above circumstances align for you then I would visit, outside of that it's quite difficult...
Read moreKids loved this place, but I was just visiting as a solo adult and it wasn't that exciting... Spent less than an hour walking around the museum exhibit and chocolate history area, plus the short film. You have to ask, but they will play it in English, othetwise it plays on repeat in German only. Unfortunately the store was closed when I went. Not sure if it's just Sundays right now, but I think it was supposed to be open .. so if that's the rain you're going, call first. I was trying to buy some of the "reject" chocolates, so was disappointed to see it wasn't open as the website stated it was. The grounds are beautiful. Didn't visit the cafe, but that looked very nice...
