Breitenau Concentration Camp Memorial — Attraction in Guxhagen

This was a quaint little stop. There is parking outside the walls but we didn't see it until after we parked across the street at the store.

Anyway, this is a small educational stop featuring 4 rooms that display artifacts from the camp and information about the history of it.

It is mostly in Germany, but easily translated. The attendant was outstanding and really tried to accommodate us and our lack of German. There is a walking tour, which I wish I could have stayed for. The attendant was willing to give the tour to us in English. If you are in the area and looking for some history then this is a great stop. Doesn't take long, but the walking tour probably would have added at least 45...

Gepflegte Anlage. Habe aber schon viele Gedenkstätten dieser Art gesehen, die zumindest im Bereich der Exponate ergiebiger waren. Auch erweckte die Anlage bei mir kaum Emotionen. Bei einem ehemaligen KZ sollte meines Erachtens irgendwann eine gewisse "Schockstarre" eintreten - so erging es mir jedenfalls in Bergen Belsen und Oranienburg. Die Erinnerung an die Dimension der Nazi-Verbrechen kann nur aufrecht erhalten werden, wenn man das Leid der Gequälten nachempfinden und verinnerlichen kann. Das fehlte mir hier. Mir kam der ganze Bau sogar eher romantisiert und versöhnlich herüber. Sowas kann natürlich auch an den Gegebenheiten (z.B. Bundsandstein bei 3000K-Licht) liegen. Ich bin da kein Fachmann, ich kann nur sagen, was mich wie berührt und erreicht. Hier kam ich raus, wie ich rein ging - informed...
