Das spätgotische Rathaus mit seinem Treppengiebel beherrscht den Marktplatz, an dem sich die beiden Hauptachsen der Stadt schneiden, dominant sich in die Fluchtlinie der beiden Straßen einschiebend, und damit die Stadt in vier Viertel teilend: Hohenecker-, Rotensteiger-, Mühlturm- und Rotenturmer-Viertel.

Der freistehende zweigeschossige Satteldachbau über rechteckigem Grundriss ist geprägt durch das typisch fränkische Putzmauerwerk mit den profilierten Sandsteinrahmungen. Zum Markt hin ist ihm eine zweiläufige Freitreppe vorgesetzt.
