This is a great place to visit out of the regular tourist hotpots in NRW and be ready to spend at least half a day, since just the walk inside the castle will take around 3 hours. Visiting the place is a great opportunity to have an impression of what a real middle-ages castle was, and albeit this is surely not the most famous castle in Germany, you will still be amazed particularly if you are not from Europe as in my case (keep in mind that a fraction of the building is covered due to restauration works). The background of the castle story, shown in the top of the main tower is told in german with english subtitles. However the museum is in german only. Also in every level down from the top of the tower you have the chance to watch a video explaining more details of the timeline. All of those videos are in german only. Because of this I suggest you visit with a German that can help with translation. After leaving the castle you will have the chance to visit the souvenir shop (where the entry tickets are sold) and have a meal in the restaurants nearby, or a waffle with ice cream. Additionally you can enjoy some leisure walks in the surrounding areas, which include the town itself, forest and rivers. So visiting the Burg Castle and surroundings can turn into a wonderful full-day visit. I totally recommend it if you want to explore a more rural and typical german place out of the typical hotspot...
Read moreBurg Castle is an incredible place to visit and a true gem of Solingen! Perched on a hill, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area and provides a rich dive into medieval history.
The castle is well-preserved, and exploring its towers, courtyards, and dungeons feels like stepping back in time. The museum inside showcases fascinating exhibits about medieval life, weaponry, and local history, making it an educational and enjoyable experience.
Here’s a tip: bring 1.5 euros with you! There’s a special spot where you can make your own souvenir, and it’s a fun little activity that makes your visit even more memorable. You’ll know exactly what I mean when you get there!
The surroundings are just as beautiful, with walking trails and cozy cafés nearby. Whether you’re into history, sightseeing, or just looking for a unique day out, Burg Castle is definitely worth the trip....
Read moreBeautiful, reconstructed castle. Lots to see; armour, furniture, costumes, paintings, everyday utensils etc. Amazing view from the keep, just have to climb a bazillion stairs! But it's nice and breezy up there.
My daughter really liked going along the covered wall.
Good restaurants and cafes for coffee, kuchen and delicious bratwurst on a bun for example. We were lucky because when we were there, a medieval play was happening with two sides having sword fights and the like. Some humorous moments too. All in German, didn't understand the words, but got the gist of what was happening.
Spent 3 hours there with the play. Go in morning as all parking is taken by afternoon and there's a really long walk uphill if the lot is full. Bring water to drink, you'll be thirsty in the summer.
Buy the guide book in English. Well...
