Thermalbad Aukammtal — Attraction in Wiesbaden

Dear fellow Americans. Please, please, please, don't miss out on such a cool part of German culture as saunas. So check this out, Aukammtal has two sections: one is basically a large swimming pool where people swim in bathing suits and another one is a "textile free" saunas area. Please give this saunas area a try, it is so much better, and also has an open air thermal pool in it! Yes, people will be naked and you will be naked. Just as mother Nature created you. This is not a fashion show. There will be regular people, older than you, younger than you, completely different. One mutual things about them though: they won't care about you. Everybody is deeply in their wellness and relaxation. "Just follow the guy in front of you". You don't have to tell everyone around that this is your first time. Simply enjoy. Bring a large towel to sit on while inside saunas and wrap in while outside. Bring bathrobe if you have one. I got mine from the post thrift store for $3 and large towel for $1. Shower shoes are optional. I personally don't use them. Bring your water bottle and snacks. Use your common sense. Don't bring obviously a full size smelly Chinese take out but a bento box, a sandwich, a banana, a drinking yogurt are fine. There is also a little cafeteria inside where you can purchase whatever. Yes, still naked. People just wear bathrobes or are wrapped in towels while eating at the tables.

Be ready to spend a whole day here. You can sweat-swim-snack-sleep-repeat. Yes, people sleep here. It is normal and very relaxing. Allow the time flow.

Obviously, no phones. Most people either sleep, meditate or read. Kindle and other e lbooks with no cameras are fine.

If you're a female and are unsure about the whole thing, make your first time (or all of them, whatever you feel like) on female's day. Some sauna workers are still males, but all of the crowd is female. I hope that helps. Again, this is a fantastic experience! I go weekly...

I very much enjoyed the facilities of the Aukammtal thermal baths. It had so many options for sauna, including the outside pool with the facilities which were a lot of fun in winter. The food and drink selection was very good and tasty, the staff was friendly.

The things that I liked less were as follows: despite a lot of space, on Monday afternoon on the women’s day the baths felt crowded. Naked women were everywhere! There were a lot of male staff walking around including going through the women’s changing room (without any obvious reason) so that sometimes felt disturbing. I wish it had more female staff. The price was 25 eur which is a bit pricy but it was for the unlimited time which is great if you decide to spend most of the day in the baths.

The Kaiser-Fiedrich had very hot baths where in the Aukammtal it was warm but not very hot. I only found one “hot/warm” tub in the Aukammtal.

My last wish is that we had more frequent men’s and women’s days or hours. Having a mixed bath is not my thing so it’s sad that one has to wait for a week for the next ...

Seit der Coronazeit sind mein Partner und ich Stammgäste im Thermalbad Aukammtal und besuchen regelmäßig den Saunabereich am Wochenende. Stammgäste wurden wir, weil das Bad die besten Coronaschutzregeln im Saunabereich in der Umgebung hatte und das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis hier einfach stimmt. Außerdem trifft man hier meistens auf ein gediegenes Publikum, das in erster Linie Ruhe sucht. Es gibt zwar leider immer mal wieder "Ausreißer", aber die werden in der Regel vom Personal dann auch darauf hingewiesen, dass es sich nicht um ein Spaßbad, sondern um einen Kurbetrieb handelt. Besonders loben muss ich die Damen an der Kasse und die vielen tollen Aufgießer und Bademeister im Saunabereich. Hier ist jeder ausnahmslos freundlich und hilfsbereit, und es macht Spaß, die Aufgüsse zu besuchen, die sie mit viel Hingabe planen und durchführen. Toll ist auch, dass seit einiger Zeit nur noch natürliche Düfte verwendet werden. Auch das Essen ist ohne Ausnahme einfach immer gut. Das war es früher schon, aber seit ein neuer Betreiber die Gastro dort führt, ist es noch besser! Es ist für uns jede Woche eine Freude, in der Sauna zu entspannen und eine schöne Zeit dort zu verleben.

Es gibt nur ein paar wenige Kritikipunkte, die ich gerne als konstruktive Kritik nennen möchte:

Sehr oft sieht man Besucher/-innen in den Ruheräumen mit dem Smartphone in der Hand. Als Frau fühlt man sich dann nicht wohl, wenn dort einer das Handy hochhält und man gerade nackt dort unterwegs ist. Ich vermisse hier deutlich sichtbare Hinweisschilder, die darüber informieren, dass die Smartphonenutzung (aus logischen und verständlichen Gründen) im gesamten Saunabereich verboten ist.

Seit letztem Sommer ist das Wasser im Außenpool im Saunabereich deutlich kälter als früher. Ich habe diesen Saunabereich gerade deshalb immer so geliebt, weil das Aukammbad das einzige Bad ist, das richtig schön warmes Wasser hatte. In allen anderen Bädern habe ich immer gefroren. Jetzt ist das im Aukammbad leider auch so. Wenn ich mich richtig erinnere, hatte das Wasser bis letztes Jahr noch 34 Grad, inzwischen sind es nur noch 32. Das ist mir im Winter definitv zu kalt. Ich finde das richtig schade und wünsche mir, dass wieder zu den alten Wassertemperaturen zurück gegangen wird. Denn mit verspannten Muskeln ist das tatsächlich kein Genuss mehr für mich. Das war früher mal anders.

Als letzten Kritikpunkt bzw. Anregung würde ich mir wünschen, dass im Schwimmbad im Textilbereich zu bestimmten Zeiten eine oder zwei Bahnen nur für Schwimmer abgetrennt werden. Wenn man dort im Schwimmerbecken Bahnen schwimmen möchte, ist man permanent damit beschäftigt, die anderen Gäste im Auge zu behalten, die leider in den seltensten Fällen darauf achten, wo sie hinschwimmen. Bahnen schwimmen wird damit zum Hindernis- und Zick-Zack-Schwimmen, und das eine oder andere Mal kam es schon zu gefährlichen Situationen, weil Badegäste blind (ohne Schwimmbrille und mit geschlossenen Augen) einfach abtauchen und direkt unter einem hochkommen. Dann hat man einfach keine Chance mehr auszuweichen.

Ansonsten kann ich das gesamte Team des Thermalbad Aukammtal (inklusive Gastro) einfach nur loben. Wir kommen gerne hierher und werden das auch weiterhin tun und euch...
