Gurudwara Singh Shaheedan, located in Sohana, Mohali, is a place of great historical and religious significance for the Sikh community. The gurudwara is dedicated to the memory of the Sikh martyrs Shaheed Baba Hanuman Singh ji 7th Jathedar of Budh dal and Jathedar of Akaal takht who sacrificed their lives for their faith and principles. He was the successor of Akali Phula Singh. He was the first one who fought against the British. He attained martyrdom during a battle with the British and Patiala State in 1846. After defeat of the Sikh Empire against the British, Jathedar decided to re-group the Nihang Sikh army against the British at the Patiala Chauni. Raja Karam Singh was ruler of Patiala and other Malwa Kingdom was in alliance with British. There were strict orders to shoot Nihangs on sight. When Jathedar Hanuman Singh arrived at Patiala, Raja Karam Singh launched a cannon attack on Nihangs, in which many Nihang Singhs were killed. Rest were forced to move to the forests nearby. Baba Hanuman Singh and around 500 Nihang warriors survived this attack, and continued to fight the heavy cannon fire of the British, with swords, bows and arrows, axes and matchlock fire. After the battle of Sohana, Baba Hanuman Singh was wounded badly and died at the battle of Sohana, Mohali at the age of 90. He was the first freedom fighter who fought against British for their independence. The gurudwara's architecture and ambiance reflect the rich Sikh heritage, with its stunning golden domes, pristine white walls, and a serene atmosphere that welcomes devotees and visitors alike. The complex includes the main prayer hall where daily prayers and kirtan are conducted, along with a langar hall where free meals are served to all, embodying the Sikh tradition of selfless service and community bonding. Gurudwara Singh Shaheedan is not only a place of worship but also a hub of community activities. It plays a pivotal role in social welfare, offering educational services, medical aid, and support to the underprivileged. The gurudwara's peaceful surroundings provide a place for meditation and reflection, allowing individuals to connect with their spiritual roots. Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan Sohana was built in remembrance of the Sikh's that were that were martyred during the Anglo Sikh wars in the mid 1800's. The Gurdwara was constructed in the memory of martyr (Shaheed) Jathedar Baba Hanuman Singh Ji (age 90), the 7th Jathedar of Budha Dal (leader of Nihang Singhs) and the Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib and 500 other Sikhs. The old Gurdwara was demolished and the new building was under constuction. The Gurdwara is famous for kirtan samagams of Baba Ji Hansali Wale and Baba Ranjit Singh Ji Dhadrianwale. Wooden shoes of the martyrs have been preserved inside the Gurdwara. History On 18th November, 1755 Baba Hanuman Singh Ji was born at Narangpur Wala. Sardar Garga Singh Bath and Mata Harnam Kaur were his parents. After the death Maharaja Ranjit Singh the traitorous administrators, General Lal Singh and Gulab Singh Dogra moved to take power from the Khalsa. Maharani Jind Kaur sent a letter to Baba Ji through General Sham Singh Attariwala to Akal Takht Sahib, Amritsar calling for help against the British. Baba Ji instantly responded and in December 1845 he sent the fighters to the Battle of Mudki. Around 10,000 Anglo soldiers were killed in a brutal war. The enemy ran way and Sikhs won the fight but a spy, Karam Singh also known by the name Karma Ali, betrayed the Sikhs and the British used cannons. The Nihangs were lacking in such support. The enemy attacked with powerful gun fire and as a result around 15,000 Sikh soldiers were martyred. All the dead bodies were cremated at Gurdwara Dukhniwaran Sahib. Baba Ji along with 500 Singhs who were fighting headed for Gharam and was badly injured with gun fire. They reached Sohana passing through Rajpura and ultimately, Baba Ji embraced martyrdom. Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan Sohana was built under the direction and supervision of Baba Harbans Singh Ji Karseva Bangla Sahib Delhi. The Gurudwara Sahib Shaheedan has been constructed at the cremation place in remembrance of Baba Ji.
