The Szelim Cave (Szelim-barlang), also known as Szelim-lyuk, is a remarkable natural and historical site located on the edge of the Gerecse Mountains near Tatabánya, Hungary. This limestone cave, measuring approximately 45 meters in length and 18 meters in height, features a massive chamber with two large openings offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. A third opening in the ceiling, formed by a collapsed section, adds to its unique structure.
Archaeological excavations in the 1930s uncovered evidence of human habitation dating back to the Upper Paleolithic era, including stone tools and animal bones. The cave has also been associated with legends from the Ottoman and Tartar invasions, where locals reportedly sought refuge within its depths.
Today, Szelim Cave is a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts. Its proximity to the Turul Monument and the scenic trails of the Gerecse Mountains make it an ideal spot for exploration and reflection. The cave's natural beauty and historical significance offer a captivating experience...
Read moreThis is a really cool cave with some great facalities tied to it. Parking and an info center (with bathrooms for 200ft). Hiking trails all around. Plenty of placards explaining the cave, its surroundings and history (in Hungarian - easily translated with Google). There is a small playground as well as a few snack shacks. We were there on a day with poor weather but a tour bus arrived at the same time. If possible, go off of peak hours to get a better experience inside the cave. Plenty of adjacent hiking trails and forest space to explore. There are some steep steps but they are not long and our 6yo had no problems getting around. I'd say if you picnic or grab a snack, explore the area a bit, you can easily spend an hour in the area. The cave itself depends on crowds but can be a 15min - ...
Read moreVery crowded, but with a spectacular view. Kids were impressed. Easy to reach, like a walk in the park. We exited the cave on one of its wide openings on the left upper side and took the narrow path which goes along the hill and has the drop on one side. It leads to another, smaller cave. Once passed that there is a small climb which will take you back to the main forest road. Terraces, ice cream shops and grill places nearby. Other points of interests, via ferrata, the Tatabánya's vulture and the...
