Tatabánya: A Perfect Spot for a Dog Walk, Family Time, and Sunbathing
The Tatabánya area is located to the northwest of Budapest, about an hour’s drive from the city center. The three main attractions are quite peaceful, mostly frequented by families with kids and dog walkers, making for a very relaxed atmosphere. 📍 Tata Castle : The castle isn’t very large. The front is relatively well-preserved, while the back is a flat ruin. Inside, it has been converted into an exhibition hall. On the side of the castle, there’s a small café on the second floor reached by a ramp. The coffee and desserts are a miss, but enjoying the lake breeze is quite pleasant. 📍 Platan Bisztro : Recommended by Michelin, this bistro is just a few hundred meters south of the castle. You can dine by the lake, which also offers a fantastic view of the castle. 📍 Turul Monument : On your way back to Budapest, you can easily stop by this monument. It only takes about half an hour to visit. The huge Turul bird sculpture, wearing a crown and standing on a sword, has been overlooking the Tatabánya region since 1907. It’s a totem symbol of Hungary. The view from here is very expansive, and watching the sunset should be stunning. 📍 Selim Cave : Right next to the monument, there’s a cave with a hole in the roof of the cave wall. It’s a fun and easy adventure, reminiscent of a similar cave I visited in South Africa, except there it took a 90-minute hike to reach 😅. #DayTripsFromBudapest #WeekendAdventures #Hungary #TataCastle #MyLife
