Travel with me to Iceland from London 🇮🇸 ad This is what we got up to on our first afternoon here around Snæfellsnes Peninsula: * Borgarnes: It took an hour’s drive from Reykjavík to the Settlement Center in Borgarnes, a town in West Iceland! There’s a restaurant onsite, souvenir shop and two exhibitions (one called Egils Saga Game about a legendary Viking and poet Egill Skallagrímsson and the second js all about Iceland’s discovery and development during The Age of Settlement - audio guides are available to rent and each one takes 30 minutes to navigate! To kick off the foodie week, we tried a sample of plokkfiskur (traditional Icelandic fish stew), fish soup, horse fillet with jus and roast lamb with root vegetables. DELISH. Fast forward an hour’s drive past STUNNING rugged landscapes to @hotelbudir! We checked into this beautiful accommodation for the night - an award winning hotel known for its charming scenery and gourmet restaurant! The rooms are rustic, the food was delicious and the private dining room was IDYLLIC. I mean… look at the view from the window?! We had: Beef carpaccio with Parmesan, truffle mayonnaise and hazelnut for starters. Lamb fillet with truffle potato and grilled onions with oyster mushroom for mains. Chocolate fondant with salted caramel and white chocolate ice cream for dinner! It’s been a few days and I’m still in disbelief that it’s so light past midnight here?! See you in day two! @seafood_iceland @inspiredbyiceland #iceland #icelandtrip #iceland🇮🇸 #minivlog #icelandroadtrip #westiceland #icelandnature #snaefellsnes #borgarnes #snaefellsnes #snaefellsnespeninsula #icelandscape #icelandfoods #icelandicfood #visiticeland #discovericeland #exploreiceland #guidetoiceland #everydayiceland #travelreel #travelreels

The Settlement Center in Borgarnes, Iceland, is an absolute must-visit for anyone interested in the rich history and culture of this fascinating country. Located in one of Iceland's most scenic towns, the center is dedicated to the early settlement of Iceland and the famous sagas. What really makes this place special, however, is not only the history but also the breathtaking views surrounding it. Borgarnes itself is nestled on a peninsula, offering stunning panoramic views of the mountains and the sea. It's easily one of the most picturesque towns in Iceland, with dramatic landscapes everywhere you look. The Settlement Center is well-designed and informative, featuring interactive exhibits that make learning about Iceland's history engaging and fun. The audio guide takes you through the stories of the first settlers, their journeys, and their challenges in a new and harsh environment. It's fascinating to see how these early inhabitants adapted to Iceland’s unforgiving climate, and you leave with a deep appreciation for their resilience. One of my favorite parts of visiting the Settlement Center was how peaceful the whole area felt. After exploring the exhibits, you can take a stroll around the town and along the waterfront, enjoying the fresh air and scenic beauty. The town itself is charming, with colorful houses and a peaceful atmosphere, making it a perfect spot to relax after learning about Iceland’s early history. In conclusion, the Settlement Center in Borgarnes is not only a great educational stop but also a beautiful and serene place to visit. If you're exploring Iceland's west coast, don't miss this hidden gem, where culture, history, and nature all come together.

The cafe is charming, set up against a rock wall with glass roof bringing the outdoors in, without the weather. Food at the cafe was authentic, well plated and delicious. Mashed fish w rye bread was delicate in texture and taste. Fish soup was best I have had. Wanted to try the horse, may have to come back. Museum audio tour was enjoyable, doing a great job of bringing Aegils Saga to where you were standing. An hour plus well spent. Mix of audio and video. Lots of authentic or period correct works mixed with artistic interpretation or handiwork to help tell the story and provide a gallery experience along with the museum. Audio tour available in several languages being broken into 2 stages was the right way to do it. Staff were welcoming. The settlement centre was a wonderful surprise and a must do if you are in or pass through Borgarnes and want an authentic Iceland experience.

Good combination of a restaurant and audio tour. Went to the restaurant for dinner, had the 'Ovenbaked fresh cod', which tasted great. It was a big piece of cod with a nice soft sauce, with some roasted vegetables as well. Had the warm chocolate cake as dessert, came with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. Did the audio tour about the settlement at Iceland, the upstairs part of ~ half an hour was nice with 3D maps, interactive pieces like buttons that light up things and more. I was less impressed by the downstairs audio tour (also ~ half an hour), it was basically just telling a story and viewing some static/rough wood sculptures that were slightly related to it. The restaurant and gift shop have a natural stone wall, which looks impressive.

My friend and I enjoyed visiting the Settlement Center. The tour is a well done audio tour with some interactive opportunities on the top floor. There you learn about how Iceland was settled. There's another portion of the tour on the basement. Here you learn about the saga of Ale. The saga portion was kind of boring, but the art they have to tell the story is beautiful. (Carved wooden people, unique wooden statues, some 'archeological' finds). You are standing/walking the whole time, so prepare for that. Also, I don't think children would like the saga part. The restaurant looked like it had great food. Different menus from lunch to dinner, but we didn't have time to eat here.

The Settlement Center was a wonderful stop on our way north from Reykjavik to Akureyri along the Ring Road. We got there shortly after it opened on a weekday which was good because a large bus tour arrived around noon and inundated the place! There are two audio tours, and you should definitely do both, but the absolute highlight is the Egils Saga exhibit. What a wonderful surprise! We were immersed in the story by the most beautiful artwork throughout. It left me feeling a very strong fascination for and connection to this island and its people. Fabulous gift shop too. I’m so glad we came and highly recommend it to everyone.
