Fischersetur Selfossi — Attraction in undefined

If you are a chess player and / or interested in chess history, that's the place to visit in Iceland. The distance from Reykjavik city center to Selfoss, where the center is situated, is approximately 55 km (about 45 minutes car driving time). It's not a big place but definitely worth visiting. We had to wait about 20 minutes to get the door opened because the center's docent had stepped out. They have all kind of memorabilia related to Bobby Fischer, including a life-sized replica of the table used in the 1972 "Match of the Century" between Fischer and Spassky. There are numerous photos, posters, etc. related to that match. They also have books and souvenirs for sale. To get to the center, one has to climb the stairs. If you find chess interesting then at least for someone from the US or Western Europe the match between Fischer and Spassky was an international event serving as yet another proxy fight (sports, space race, etc.). The museum does a good job including a video about the match. The guide I had (unfortunately, I cannot remember her name) was excellent and took lots of time to walk a small group of us through the museum. She was actually even one of the reasons the museum was placed in Selfoss. Watch the documentary, look at the various cartoons and newspaper articles. It's quite interesting, as is the story of the Fischer-Spassky rematch and the political intrigues leading to Fischer's imprisonment in Japan before he was made an Icelandic citizen. A WONDERFUL experience. To begin with, even though the museum is "closed" in winter time, you can email them and they'll arrange for you to visit! The curator lady, Aldis, is VERY knowledgeable. I consider myself a real Fischer-enthusiast and truth be told, I do know a lot about this unmatched chess genius. And yet, I learned A LOT from Aldis! She literally gave myself and my wife a full lecture on Fischer's life, especially as related to the "Match of the Century", ie the Fischer-Spassky match of 1972, Reykjavik, Iceland There Is a replica of the table, chairs, board and pieces, in the main hall 9f the small museum. There are tons of photographs, newspaper and journal clippings, artifacts, memorabilia,... etc. There's even a little gift shop! Bobby's grave is less than 1 kilometer away. HIGHLY...
