TL;DR: Viking World is a fascinating museum between Keflavík and Reykjavík, featuring a full-scale Viking ship, historical exhibits, and interactive experiences. Worth a stop! Viking World is a fantastic stop if you’re traveling between Keflavík and Reykjavík. The museum offers a deep dive into Icelandic Viking history, including the stunning Íslendingur, a full-scale replica of a Viking longship that you can actually walk aboard. Putting on period costumes and stepping onto the ship made for a fun and immersive experience. The museum is well laid out, with informative exhibits about Norse culture, settlement history, and the voyages of early explorers. Unfortunately, the VR game wasn’t available during our visit, but there was still plenty to see and do. There’s also a large outdoor display, though we didn’t explore it due to the intense high winds that day. Overall, Viking World is a great stop for history lovers and anyone wanting to experience Iceland’s Viking heritage up close.

We stopped by Viking World before a flight from KEF and spent right around an hour here. We were immediately greeted by a beautiful building and view, followed by an easy check in with friendly staff (we booked tickets on the drive over from Reykjavík). There is a range of interpretive exhibits with information about Viking settlement, trade, culture, etc., and a variety of original and replica artifacts to admire. And of course, you get to go onboard the Íslendingur (a replica Viking Ship that has actually sailed across The Atlantic!). One thing that really stood out to me was the rock flooring that's installed throughout the building. It was SO satisfying to walk on and almost felt like you were walking outdoors, which may very well be intentional, and if so, didn't go unnoticed! Viking World is a great way to be greeted by, or bid farewell, on what will likely be your wonderful trip to Iceland!

Myself and my partner loved this place. Really quaint and very well designed. Ideal for a spare 30-60 mins if you are on your way to the Blue Lagoon or similar nearby. The staff were very friendly and encouraged us to try on the 2 genuine Viking helmets they had on display at the counter. There is a full Viking long boat suspended in the middle of the main room area with the deck accessible from the 1st floor. Additionally there is a Norse Mythology section with optional accompanying audio tour from the desk on entry at no extra fee. Entry is reasonably priced at 3000IK (£6ish) for a single visit, but I think there is a very good value City card available from the Reykjavik City Hall for £25 which allows free entry and discounts at lots of local galleries and museums. Had we stayed for longer than 2 full days, we'd have gotten one, or bought from home and planned the journey.

A nice museum close to Keflavik which has as its centerpiece the Islendingur, a replica of a Viking longboat which crossed the Atlantic to Newfoundland. It's open to climb into and walk around. There are other exhibits which cover how the Vikings lived, their sagas and expeditions across the North Sea, especially focusing on the journeys to Vinland (modern day Newfoundland) and their encounters with the resident First Nations. They also have a gift store selling books, blankets, post cards and other Viking themed items. Worth checking out if you've a bit of time between flight connections or on your way to Reykjavik.

Before heading to the airport, I went to visit Viking World. I was able to get a pretty good experience in about 40 minutes. There was a slight but of rushing near the end because I had to drop my rental car off, but I would say anywhere from. an hour to an hour and a half would be a decent a.ount of time to go through enjoy the sights, history and videos that are apart of this experience. I didn't schedule in advance, and was able to walk in purchase a ticket and there is so much history you'll learn from this self lead tour. It was also pretty amazing, with a little nervousness, to be able to walk onto a viking ship.
