Wonderful alternative when there's no volcanic eruption
I took a flight with Volcano Heli on Saturday, August 7th. The flight was supposed to be over the volcanic eruption near Fagradalsfjall, but, as luck would have it, there was no activity in the volcano - that's nature in Iceland for you, it doen't like to play ball. Someone from the company called me beforehand to tell me about the lack of activity and told me that they offered an alternative flight. We would still fly over the volcano, but we would also fly over the cliffs that are south of the volcano, as well as over the geothermal area of Seltún and the lake Kleifarvatn. For me, any helicopter flight is a good one, so I agreed to the change in itinitary. Sandra was the pilot on the flight and it was only me and one other passenger. Sandra was amazing. She was a well of information about everything we saw and even flew over some hidden gems in the vicinity of the volcano as well as in the vicinity of the city. It's amazing to think that all those things we saw are just a short distance from the most populated area of Iceland and an absolute minority of those people even know what is in their backyard! Initially, of course, I was unhappy not to see glowing lava flow from the crater, but the fact that there was no lava spewing out of the crater meant that we could fly so much closer to the crater and actually take a look into the abyss within. We did see some red bits of lava in the total lava flow, and the lack of eruption made it also possible for us to wrap our heads around the scope of the lava flow in the few short months that the volcano has been active. Another high point for me was the cliffs of Krýsuvíkurbjarg, which are just south of the eruption and best viewed from the sea or from the air. The view of lake Kleifarvatn from the air also hammers home how big it actually is, and to think it is sitting in a volcanic crater is frightenly exhilirating. Then there was the secret valley beyond the lake with the fishing hut and on our way back, we took in the new Sky Lagoon at the end of the Kópavogur peninsula. All in all, a fantastic alternative when the temperamental Icelandic nature is not...
Read moreFrom start to finish, highly recommend Volcano Heli staff and flight tour. We arrived 30 minutes early to our 3pm trip and waited outside building 3, calling the phone number in the email when we arrived to check in as instructed. When the helicopter returned from its trip, a staff member walked over to the gate to get us and provide more instructions. The staff told us where to sit based on our sizes and the pilot gave us a brief walk through before starting up the helicopter. We’ve been in a helicopter once before back in the states for a scenic leaf peeping tour many years ago, but this was a bucket list experience I never thought I would have; a live volcano tour. Our flight was an amazing view of Reykjavik, a dormant volcano, the magma fields, and the current gushing volcano. Our pilot was awesome and kindly entertained my questions during flight. My husband and I were absolutely blown away and so glad we paid the money. Though many incredible things we’ve seen and done in Iceland, this will be something we remember for the rest of our lives. These pictures are just from my phone - I can’t wait to see my camera shots on a bigger screen!! I asked our Pilot what his favorite tour to give is, and he said he loves to show off the glaciers. For a future trip to Iceland, we will definitely be...
Read moreIceland is a land full of amazing and picturesque landscape. Me and my wife decided to book this "Sunset" evening Hot Spring and Glacier tour which was highly recommended by the pilot Matt.
He is really professional throughout the flight ensuring the safety is at the highest level. He also have a vast knowledge of this piece of land and throughout the 2 hours of tour we had gain better insight of the formations and we landed by a remote geo thermal area.
I would highly recommend this tour to everyone especially those who love photography or just want to see the world from another angle.
Words are just words so check out the photos that we took to believe the beauty of this amazing country. PS The photos were taken just using my phone. Unfortunately we left our extra batteries in the car as we were too excited to go for the ride.
Signing off...
