The place is near and tidy. Not flamboyant, just enough. Lots of specimens and some live sea creatures. Please visit to care for the aquatic life and their well being. I felt the clownfish, what all others call Nemo, were losing their colour due to malnourishment. It may be my mistake or it may be true as they do get affected if their environment is stressful, food isn't good. The ticket counter eldery person admitted the sea water here and outside in the wild will affect them. The caretaker, who was screaming happily and earlier, with no decorum as if no visitors were present when we were visiting and looking around, got very offended. He was in no mood to take any form of input as though he was a Harvard graduate. He said that is the color they come in. Some images didn't match the fish in the aquarium and he said he can't do anything about that. Some fish kept in the aquarium grow to massive sizes. Some in the reviews shown from a few years back, like the lion fish, clownfish, etc aren't there anymore. Hope they are actually released in the wild. Once while showing that he takes the best care of them, he slammed the glass so hard repeatedly, the poor fish 🐠 were scattering terrified in their already confined tiny space. I had to shout at him that they already may be stressed in the confines of the aquarium, and he doesn't need to overdo dramatics to show he is the best caretaker. He may be doing a good job, but if not, god bless...
Read moreFisheries Department's Aquarium is located by the side of Water Sports Complex and closed on Wednesday. The daily lunch time is from 1300 hrs to 1400 hrs. Museum has decent specimens of dead marine funa. However, it's 'live aquarium part' is badly managed with sub-optimal collection of live marine fishes. Infact, the aquarium part of Samudrika Naval Museum is far superior then this place. There's a small souvenir shop run by a local self help group at its main Entrance Door; where one can find various gift items made of sea shells. This outlet is one of the cheapest selling joint of such product in Port Blair. Infact, cost of similar items are cheaper here than Government controlled "Sagarika" Selling Outlet. Ofcourse, to get the optimum price one has to use his/her 'Bargaining' skill upto the hilt. Overall, it is worth spending half hour at this Aquarium of Department...
