At a distance of 21.5 km from Manali Bus Stand, 23.5 km from Kullu, 1.5 km from Naggar Castle, The Nicholas Roerich Museum is one of the prominent museums in and around Manali. Nicholas Roerich is a Russian artist arrived in the Himalayas after the revolution of 1917, where he died in the year 1947. He married to Helena Roerich and famous Indian actor Devika Rani is his daughter in law. The Nicholas Roerich art gallery was founded in 1962 by Svyetoslav Roerich, son of Nicholas Roerich. The building that now houses the gallery once served as the residence of Nicholas Roerich. Himachal Pradesh Government and Russian Government have formed a trust to run this art gallery as the Roerich Heritage Museum. Paintings of Kullu, Spiti and Lahaul made by the painter have been housed in the ground floor of the gallery. A great number of his works are preserved in museums all over the world. Most of the paintings show the beauty of ice covered valleys and peaks during early hours of evening. The artist's private rooms have been preserved in the upper floor of the museum. There are also a few photos of Nicholas on display here, such as the one in which he is posing in his front Lawn with Jawaharlal Nehru. The original work of Roerich on the Himalayas, along with his quotations and words of wisdom as well as those of the visitors and admirers of the gallery, have also been put on display here. Timings: 9 am to 5 pm on all days except Monday.

Nicolas Roerich (Nikolai Roerich) was a Russian painter, who also wrote poetry and made Naggar his home for the last few years of his life. He travelled extensively through Tibet and the Himalayas. Nicolas Roerich’s old home (ground floor) has now been converted into the Roerich Museum; he lived here from the late 1920s till 1947. Nicolas Roerich had varied interests and was also known to be a writer, philosopher, archeologist, explorer and mystic. His interest and popularity in Naggar ensures a steady stream of Russian tourists coming in. Following the footsteps of Nicolas Roerich, a lot of writers and painters have also made Naggar their home and a hub for anyone with a creative streak. The museum here is small but well-maintained; it has paintings made by the artist and philosopher on display. It is a very tranquil place located just above the main market in Naggar. The upper floor of the house is in a fragile state, and hence tourists are not allowed inside. The interiors can be seen through glass panels of closed windows. The most popular paintings in the museum are those with colourful nature landscapes, capturing the grandeur of the mountains.

A small art gallery, the Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery has a small collection of his work in his pretty stone and wood bungalow on a hillside on his mountain edtate. The views from the landscaped lawns and garden is exceptional. On a winter weekday, there's peace and quiet, and a good place to reflect on life from its many solitary benches. The Svetoslav and Devika Rani Gallery, though small, had the potential to be a bigger crowdpuller. Devika was of course a big Indian movie star and Svetoslav a painter in his own right and an exceptionally handsome one at that. The small display is charming but badly curated, nothing to tell us how they met, or fell in love, or how they married. And it just contains prints of old photographs and paintings, nothing original. The third gallery is on Himachal art and is on a hillside above the estate. Come for its quaintness, mountain and valley views.

Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery and Museum in Manali. Is a captivating cultural institution dedicated to the renowned Russian painter, philosopher, and archaeologist, Nicholas Roerich. Situated amidst the scenic beauty of the Himalayas, the Museum showcases Roerich's artworks, artefacts, and personal belongings, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of his life and artistic legacy. The gallery is in a beautiful building surrounded by lush gardens, offering a serene and peaceful environment. As you step inside, you are greeted by a vast collection of Roerich's paintings, which depict his deep appreciation for nature, spirituality, and the unity of all cultures. His artworks often showcase mesmerizing landscapes, vibrant colours, and a sense of mysticism that transcends traditional artistic boundaries. The Museum also displays a range of artefacts and personal belongings that give visitors a glimpse into Roerich's fascinating life. This includes his paintings, sculptures, photographs, letters, and various items collected during extensive travels across the Himalayas and other parts of the world. Each artefact tells a story and adds to the immersive experience of exploring Roerich's artistic journey. One of the Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery and Museum highlights is Roerich's Himalayan Research Archive. This section houses a vast collection of books, manuscripts, and research materials related to Roerich's work, philosophy, and expeditions. Itiss a valuable resource for scholars, researchers, and art enthusiasts interested in delving deeper into Roerich's contributions to art and culture. The Museum also offers educational programs, workshops, and cultural events to promote art appreciation and the preservation of Roerich's legacy. Visitors can participate in painting workshops, learn about the significance of Roerich's artistic techniques, and gain insights into the philosophies that influenced his work. These activities create an interactive and engaging experience, fostering a deeper connection with Roerich's art and vision. Beyond the artistic treasures housed within the gallery, the surroundings of Manali add to the allure of the Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery and Museum. Manali is known for its breathtaking natural beauty, with snow-capped mountains, gushing rivers, and lush valleys. Visitors can combine their visit to the Museum with exploring the scenic landscapes, indulging in adventure activities like trekking and paragliding, or simply immersing themselves in the tranquil ambience of...

Naggar a small town in Himachal has this beautiful art gallery. Nicholas roerich an artist known for his paintings of the Himalayas. He settled down in Himachal with his family. His paintings still hang on the walls of the house he once lived in. The house has been converted into an art gallery. Most of his possessions including the furniture have been kept as is, behind glass for viewers to see but not cause any harm to the age old property. The house is a nice cosy warm place and the paintings are put up on most for the walls in the house. There is a garden outside which leads to a cliff like place where viewers can go to the garden and experience the beauty of the Himalayas. The paintings are of different types from canvas to oil painting and other styles and they clearly depict his love for the mountains. The small outhouse has also been converted into a museum with old pictures of the family with politicians and other influential people at that time in India. There is a musuem/ information centre in the same vicinity built by the Russian govt to promote the work of roerich. This centre is very informative and has details of other such organisations to join as well. The staff there is very friendly. The place is located at the end of the road so if you walk straight down or ask any locals they will guide you. Not very difficult to find as the place is small and this is the only big art gallery there. Walk down from the castle road straight. Depending on your interest in art and painting you can spend from 1-4 hours in the place. Not many people inside the house as staff but the information is provided below each pianting. For additional information there is staff at the main entrance to help or guide. There are booklets and postcards and a mini giftshop too incase you want to buy minituare paintings or cards. The place has been maintained well and the entry fee is nominal. It's totally worth when you explore the whole place. If you have time to spare while on your way to Kullu this place is totally worth a visit. It's a small town/ village, non commercial and very raw. Gives a good feel of being away from the more commercial mountain towns yet close enough to get to those places. Has a few traditional small temples to explore while in Naggar. Overall...
