Situated almost 2 Kms away from the inner Golconda fort, inside the premises of the Naya Qila is a huge tree which looks like it’s been brought from an Alien World. With a trunk that is almost 25 meters in circumference, it has a hollow cavity inside which is so big that according to popular legend 40 people fit inside.
The branches of this tree resemble trunks of  trees you see everyday.  So enormous the size of this tree that locals say it resembles a group of elephants standing really close to each other. Hence the name ‘Hatiyan Ka Jhad’ or literally ‘Elephant Tree’.The bark of the tree is extremely hard and looks finely polished. But climbing the tree can be pretty easy as the bark forms many grab-holes and patterns that aid the adventurous climber. This tree has been here for at least 600 years according to locals and historians alike. A native of the Island of Madagascar, it’s called the Boabab tree and is pretty famous in Africa where it’s associated with mystical powers. In a town in Africa, there is a church built inside one of these trees. There are many stories about how this Boabab ended up here in Golconda. According to some it was planted by the Arabian merchants who were frequent travellers along the African coastline and might have planted this tree during the reign of the Qutb Shahi kings. According to some it was planted by wandering Fakirs when they visited Golconda. How did they get a hold of it? Nobody...
Read moreI recently visited Hatiyan Jhad Baobab Tree and was thoroughly impressed with the experience. The tree itself is absolutely breathtaking, with a width of 25 meters and a history that dates back many centuries. It was fascinating to learn about the tree's origins in Madagascar and to stand in its presence.
The surroundings were also beautiful, with stunning views of the golf course and the Golconda fort. The atmosphere was peaceful and serene, making it a great place to spend some time with family.
It's worth noting that finding the tree can be a bit challenging. Google Maps only suggested three routes, and only one of them worked. It might be easier to find the tree by approaching from the other side of the golf course, where you can follow the road for around 1.5 kilometers. Just be aware that there are no bathroom facilities or drinking water available at the tree, and it's probably best to visit during the day.
Overall, I would highly recommend Hatiyan Jhad Baobab Tree as a place to visit. The tree is a truly amazing sight, and the surrounding views are breathtaking. It's a great place for a quick visit with family, and the best part is that there is no ticket required for entry. Just be sure to bring some water and plan your visit for daytime to ensure the...
Read moreNot too far from the Golconda Fort is Hyderabad’s biggest possible tree of Baobab. The centuries old Hatiyaan tree stands right opposite the Mulla Khiyali Mosque in the less frequented vicinity of Naya Quila.
Belonging to the African Baobab family, the tree gets its name from its enormous girth and also the branches that look like elephant trunks. The hollow of this mesmerizing tree can easily accommodate over 20 people. An interesting venue to listen to several legends from locals, Haatiyon ka jhad as it’s popularly known is believed to have been the hideout for Ali Baba’s 40 thieves.
